Right I've slept on it, not literally lol, and I'm going to re-assess this morning. I've welded up a lot worse in the past and its not going to cost me anything other than time to give it a go............

SACRILEGE !!!! The car looks far too good ( judging from the pictures) to scrap ! IMO . As long as all the rot is cut out and it's welded properly it will be as good as new  ( or even better/stronger if you use thicker metal )

I always think it a shame when I see Golfs and other V'Dubs in breakers yards as often when I've looked around them they are often still in serviceable condition, if only someone was willing to spend a little time an effort on them . The trouble is that some people panic thinking their cars had it just because it requires a bit of welding.

( P.S. Just be carefull of the fuel lines  :nerd: )

Spot on, if welded properly (which it will be ), it should be stronger than original.

Looks like I'm going to be dropping the subframe and fuel tank and dusting off the welder. Pictures to follow.........

Better get off this thing and get my a**e in gear

The latest: subframe and tail pipe now removed so good access. Have chiseled out the worst of the damage, now about to attack with a tool that I have just bought: wire cup in an angle grinder.

Pics just taken, prior to attacking with the angle grinder:-

Subframe removal:-

Damage:-

Cheers, I think I'll need it, I haven't done any welding for about 10 years so I'm going to have to teach myself all over again
