Go onto www.confused.com you just fill in your details once then it searches through all the online insurance companies and gives you loads of quotes.
For my first car (1.6 driver) i had to go on my mums insurance and it was 1200 with my mums 1 year no claims (third part fire and theft). I think no matter what engine you get all golfs seem to have high insurance.

1.6... will be really high, mine was £550 3PFT with 1 years ncb as the car standard!

go to www.elephant.co.uk and choose the 10month bonus accelerator scheme, your only insured for 10 months but you get a full years ncb at the end of 10months, really cheap aswell,im 19,no ncb, golf gti 1.8 16v, with mods lowered and full exhaust system, £935 tpft.

I'd recommend Elephant as well.

My first Golf (Mk2 GL 1.8 ) cost me 1200 to insure using Ensleigh/Norwich Union, but now I'm with Elehpant and their quotes always seem to be Confused.com .
Try some of the VW specialists, they seem pretty decent, Adrian Flux or
BrentAcre VW Insurance Specialists (01792 650933) or Greenlight insurance (0870 7535455). Some will also allow you mods too.

Watch out though with Elephant, I went for the 10month bonus Accelerator scheme, but when I went elsewhere for quotes after completing 10months, they said it wasn't worth 1yr no claims, so would only quote me for zero no claims.

So I've had 2x 10month bonus accelerator policies, to earn me "2yrs no claims", which Elephant were happy to use to get me a new full 12month policy.

Elephant seem alright, i just got a test quote for the kind of golf im planning on getting in a few months and the quote came out as £2832.41 (18/male/manchester/0-Years NCB/1 month Full licence-Pass Pluss/3rd Party Fire+Theft/No mods) but shot up to  £3324.76  if i declared the mods i wish to do to it (Suspension lowered <5cm, tinted windows >30%, nicer interior, alloys, De-badged grill etc - the usual small mods that make alot of difference to the style.)

But thats all for a MK3 so i'd imagine its considerably lower for mk2! :) Will defenitly have to check them out when i get the car.

Did you put one of your parents on the quote as a named driver ?

When you're young it helps to put someone over 30 on the insurance, even if they will never drive the car in reality, it just looks better to the insurance company.

Elephant don't seem to be as good with mods unless you live in an exceedingly safe area.

Oh yeah, if you are a student, away at uni, make sure you insure it at your parents house (if it's a safer area).

Nah, that was with just me on the insurance - and im not a student! :) Putting my dad on may drop it quite a bit (He's got about 25yrs without an accident).

yeah but in my case i cna't put my parents on.. cos they may have to put my lil bro on theirs... as its expensive and also they both got a policy each already! argh!!!

Insurance companies know that when u put a young perons on your insurance... i think its daft, may aswwell collect your own no claims from word go i think, then at 21 you got 4 yrs ncb (hopefully) and can insure better casrs for less!!!
