Mk1 1.6 Lack of Power Help
« on: 10 November 2005, 00:20 »
Hi,

I am a newbie from Portugal, and I have bought recently a Golf GTI Mk1

The car is all fine but compared to another MK1 GTI that I had a few years ago it lacks power!!!!..Also the fuel pump is quite noise and the car feels very nervous at idle!!!

It only has 80.000Kms on clock, and It previously belonged to a 82 year old gentleman.

Where should I look in order to get this fixed??

Here is a pic:

Thanks

Lobao

Check the timing and CO, plugs, leads ect. always a good place to start.

Nice looking motor

cheers

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice about the lack of power, I just wanted to say fair play to the 82 year old gentleman for owning such a great car!!!! Imagine having all that spare time during your retirement to spend flying around in a GTi!!!

Happy days!

Lack of power, noisy fuel pump and dodgy tickover sound like maybe the fuel filter's blocked  :nerd:

Don't waste £15 on a new one though (it might not even be the problem) -

nice and simple fix:-

whip off the fuel filter & work out the direction of flow (there's an arrow )

Blow quite down the filter in the opposite direction to fuel flow - all the debris that's been filtered will spray out of the filter and it'll be ready for refitting

You'll probably get a nasty petrol taste in your mouth but £15 buys loads of chewing gum
