« on: 08 November 2005, 10:34 »
right getting all my ideas down on paper for whyen i eventually get round to doing my golf up at the mo i have a 16valve which impresses me but want that edge was gonna go for a turbo conversion but scrubbed that idea so getting the head ported and polished and have decided to get a 2lt conversion done i have read the posts here regarding this but from what i can make out its for the 8 valve now i assume because the 16v head is different from the 8 v would i need to use a 16v bottom end or doesnt it matter also any advice on the best bottom end would be appreciated also what parts would be needed or is it quite simply changing the head gasket to a 2 lt 1 new starter motor dizzy???
cheers

I cant help much cos i didnt do the conversion but as far as i know its a pretty straight forward swap. Mine uses a 9A block from a passat i think.

Since you running a 16v best bottom end to go for would be 9a from passat or corrado. I've done this to my old mk2 16v last year. 9a bottom end is straight swop and can use everything from your kr engine. As for performance its a transformation torque delivery is alot lower more to 8v. mine had flowed head, kent cams with vernier pulley, 4branch and powerflow system, Had wur mod and set up at stealth running at 187bhp with 151ibft torque was very fast motor. I will be doing another when my 8v is finished, But hopefully with throttle bodies.
MK4 1.8t bored/stroked 2.0lt AEG crank, 83mm supertech pistons, intergrated rods, ACL race brgs, Flowed large port head, Supertech valves, All ARP bolts, GTX2871r turbo, Tial wastegate, 3" pipewerx dp, REVO stage 3 tune, Direct port water meth, MORE TO COME!!! Ready to go racing

does that even include head gaskets and stuff...also if its similar to an 8 v does it still rev to the red like a normal 16v

Get h/set for the 2lt and use just the inlet kr cam hotter cam than the 9a engine due it uses a cat corrado and the passat. If you using flowed head use 4branch and good exh system. I personally suggest supersprint or powerflow, Have used both excellent.

Use the kr inlet cam it's got better valve lift than 9a cam, Both 9a and kr exh cams are the same. Buy head gasket set for 9a only thing whats different is the head gasket 9a bore size is different 83mm as to 81mm on kr. Use a 4 branch if funds allow it get the exh gases out faster more bhp. more torque. mine first built with 9a block, kr cams, flowed head, standard exh manifold and pwerflow exh 168 bhp, Got 187 bhp when fitted kent cams, vernier pulley and 4branch with good tune up on stealth's rollers.

This is a great conversion- am just finishing mine off! (1989 Mk2 Golf Gti 16v)

I originally bought a 9a 2lt Passat block and thought i could simply stick my 16v Golf head on it.
However, make sure you buy the engine from a 16v 9a Passat/Corrado!!
The 8v has different pistons which will screw up compression and batter your valves...

In hindsight i realise its obvious but i bought a block over the phone like a dumbass

I was gutted but then bought a 16v Audi 80 Quattro of YeBay for £67.00 which has a 6a engine. This is the same as the Passat 16v 2lt but because it is fitted inline it has different inlet/exhaust manifolds, sump and oil pump. I swapped the clutch over from the Golf engine and also the cams. As the other dudes have rightly said you get more power/torque as the 2lt engines were originally detuned for emissions (the Audi/VW 2lt 16v were only 136bhp versus the 1800 Golf 16v of 139bhp- the Golf cams are an easy and quick swap, just make sure you line up the cam chain cogs carefully!)

What isnt so hot about my conversion is i put the clutch friction plate in the wrong way round so make sure you check first (wont engage gear otherwise :embarassed:)

I swapped the sumps over and fitted a brand new 16v Passat/Corrado oil pump (GSF are cheap!) and when the engine fired up it was VERY smooth and quiet so defo fit a new pump. I guess we dont realise they wear out just cuz they pump lubricant!

I am now off to remove engine and box again to refit clutch and hope i havent done too much damage. My Golf has (for the time being) oem air filter and standard exhaust so it will be fun to see the improvements!
Buy a set of splined sockets (GSF again) a new oil pump and oil filter and its just a case of swapping things over...take a picture or label wring though first...got mine all wrong!)

Good luck, there is some great advice on this forum, am glad to be a part of it!
If only my Volkswagen was as reliable as everyone else's...
