Timing chain tensioner

Good morning all,

 I know there is a thread on this subject already, but I really didn’t fancy looking through 75 pages… Sorry about that.

GTI is about to hit 75k miles, and although there are no signs that there is an issue with the tensioner, I feel it prudent to get it looked into.

I’ve had a couple of quotes to have the whole timing chain kit fitted, but I was wondering if maybe just getting the tensioner changed (if needed) would be suitable… thoughts?

If you are not experiencing any problems at present, I would firstly get the valve phase timing checked. This will give you some idea of chain wear/stretch. It is also possible to check the tensioner through the front of the timing chain cover to see if it is the original and how far it has extended. If the original then get it changed as they were faulty. If changing the tensioner the work to remove covers etc makes doing chains and guides as well worth the extra cost.

Good idea, I guess having the whole thing done makes more sense, especially if so much has to be taken apart for the tensioner anyway.

I’m hoping to get it looked at next week, I’ll know more then.
