Revs sitting at 1200rpm
« on: 22 March 2026, 01:59 »
Hi all. Ive got a 2018 gti performance 245bhp. It's started to idle at 1200 even when full warm feels like it's in sports mode or even on cold start. Ive recently changed pcv but still the same. Ive scanned the car a number of times and no codes or no cel lights. Any ideas where to look next or anyone else had similar problems.  Thanks.

@Karloskarlotti; welcome to the forum.

Difficult to give an ‘armchair diagnosis’ from the information provided but with your car being a 2018 facelift model - an mk7.5 - its likely it’ll be fitted with a petrol particulate filter (GPF) and if so, it’s possible it might be going through a forced / active GPF regeneration to neutralise accumulated particulate matter in the filter.

Have a read of my post - reply #6 - at the llnk below;

If it is a forced / active GPF regeneration that you’re experiencing there may be other symptoms as well (outlined in the post at the above link), in particular, significantly worse fuel consumption for the duration of the regen. If you try the process for helping to keep the GPF clear of accumulated particulate matter that’s outlined in my post at the above link, please report back for the benefit of other forum members on whether or not it corrects your high rpm issue.

As what SRGTD says, mine does exactly the same every few months. I followed his advice a year or so ago, problem solved.

Hi. Ive just done a battery test and the SOH is 6% this might be the issue as if I turn my heaters off and start the car the idle is perfect soon as I turn them on it raises the rpm to 1200. I'm thinking it could be making the alternator work harder maybe.

Mine doesnt sit at 1200 rpm all the time but 2 observations,

Even if up to full operating temperature, if you park up for 15 mins to pop into a shop it's noisy for about 60 secs on the restart. The ECU must be doing 'something' similar to a cold start.

The harder you work the HVAC the idle speed will increase. My GTD did this too.
