HELP! Damaged pan roof

HELP!

I was reversing my car into the garage with the roof open, and a part of the door mechanism (barn style two side opening doors) got caught underneath the glass and BANG - I’ve managed to break something and pull the glass roof out of the tracks and it’s twisted. The glass itself is not visibly damaged. I found a broken bit of plastic from don’t know where and the guides/runners may be bent. On one side the glass slides forward and back a bit, but not on the other.

I’ve been looking for a guide/instructions for how it should look / how to remove the glass to see if I can do anything to get it all back in place but no luck. Does anyone have any manuals/guides?

It seems different from mk7 but I assume it would have the same general principles of some sort of frame being bonded to the glass and that frame then being attached to the runners/mechanism. There are some star/torque headed screws that look tempting to try if I can get to them but don’t want to do it blind if I can help it.

For now I’ve put it in the garage with it as is.

Am gutted, have had the car since March 23, after ordering in April 21, and only issues I’ve had are some electrical gremlins to do with front asssit (seem to have mostly gone after dealer did something) and the rear badge has some blistering or something) and a puncture.

(I’ve been in erwin and downloaded everything I think I might need, but it’s not the clearest for me and think may need to get it calibrated even if I get it back together)

Any advice appreciated, apart from close the roof before putting the car in the garage….

Oh very unfortunate

TBH you might be as well to bite the bullet and take it to the dealers. May not be cheap, but get it fixed properly. You don’t want leaks etc down the road.

I’m trying to visualize how side opening doors hit the sunroof though? It’s not a roller door no?

You are right, even if/after I do something so can drive it safely I’m gonna have to suck it up and get it checked out and if necessary properly repaired

Here's what I'd do.

I'd get some quotes first, because one things for sure the majority of the cost will be labour and VW's labour costs will be high and in my experience they don't have some superior magical staff who do the work just the same normal people as everyone else. Also the fix may not be as difficult as you think and luckily as its not mechanical, technically speaking, it  won't be a warranty problem if something else happens to the car in the future. Also you may be able to claim through your insurance if the price runs into the thousands which it may well do if you use VW.

Good luck.

Update:
- managed to remove the glass panel. Had to do without re activating the motor so was a bit tricky. Four torx screws each side
- found two bits of broken plastic, one either side, can’t work out where from
- once the glass was off was able to inspect the runners/track
- the drivers side had lifted off / out of position and both sides come out the guides
- drivers side rear guide is cracked/bent
- with a bit of force managed to get it back in place both sides
- re attached the glass at front and back points (couldn’t access the two middle ones anymore in its position)
- moment of truth 1… activated the mechanism back to tilt position - it worked
- then able to do centre points
- moment of truth 2…. Put into close position… some odd noises but worked.
- however drivers side rear massively out of alignment, other points seem ok
- readjusted drivers side screws as best as possible, however best can get it is still out of alignment, presumably due to something being bent
- although looking at original marks where screws were it was already using most of the alignment space, so wasn’t a lot of adjustment space left

Have left it for now as at least it’s closed, seems to open and close ok. Will reflect and see if want to try to completely detach again and see if something can be bent/pushed back

Plus there are the two left over / presumably broken bits of plastic

Why not keep an eye out for a second hand roof from a scrap car if you want to keep the costs down?

Yeah I think I’d need a completely new mechanism / unit and no idea how much a new one would be, will have to find out and then keep an eye out on eBay or a breakers.

What I probably need is an undamaged example in a car that has had the glass taken out for a glass repair or something to compare to to see what’s off, if anything.

It’s due a service soon so will ask the dealer to quote me / estimate for repair if I can’t manage to realign myself. It’s one of those things where someone who knows what they are doing could probably look at it and go move this that way that the other way and it would all line up.

Although I’m sure new parts and fixing would be 000s if I knew at the end of it it would be perfect (or as close as it’s possible to be) I’d probably suck it up as I plan to keep the car long term.

If it were mine, on a 2 year old car that I plan to keep for a while, I’d bite the bullet and get a proper repair.
