Maybe slightly off topic, but I just checked the oil level from the infotainment system and it's reading about 50%.

I would like to top it up but was wondering which oil and grade to use.

I never got the point of an electronic dip-stick, when it didn’t work (engine conditions not correct etc) you had to wait ages to check it. Engineers trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist IMO.

I'm with you here, didn't realise the 8.5 had this until I read this. I would be dubious about trusting a electronic sensor for oil levels too, always a doubt it might not be working correctly and reading wrong. At least with a dip stick you can see for yourself, definitely one to add if you have an 8.5!

I agree, and something I looked into when I got my 8.5, but we’d need to know for sure that the dipstick is the correct length, and that there is no minor differences compare to the Mk8, VW are unlikely to advise of one that is suitable, due to there being no part to match against the mk8 on there system, this is something I wish to do, but only when I know which part is 100% correct.

I do actually open the bonnet to give it a clean most weeks.
I’ve just never paid too much attention to the dipstick fitting enough to remember whether it has a locating tube thingy.
DAF trucks and their three foot long dipsticks that you have to double dip, that’s another matter.

The tube is still there, but it has a little cap clipped on top, should be easy t remove, but I’d want to confirm that the dipstick I put in it (from the MK8) is not too long. Or short for that matter!

There should also be a sticker with the info you’re looking for on the first part of the air intake just above the grill.

I've just ordered a dipstick from the parts department at the dealership. There is one available that matches my 8.5 GTI VIN, £19.08p inc VAT. The tube is already there, so it’s just the actual dipstick that is needed.
