I was required to take Early retirement on ill health grounds in 2011. I was devastated.   My lovely wife encouraged me to buy a car that I really fancied as a treat, soon after retirement started.   I agonised. Eventually opting for a Golf GTI that I’d always liked, but had never quite been in comfortable, let alone easy reach.
A New Mk6 GTI was ordered in Jan 12 and delivered in May with some carefully chosen options.  Black. 18” Monday Shadow wheels. Dynaudio and Cruise +,+.  It was a gem of a car. A real head turner.  Got many an approving nod.
I part Ex’d it to upgrade to a new R in 2019. I wish I’d kept my GTI as our second car. They become like a second skin.  I understand  It’s still a beaut.  65k miles and Not a single Advisory to be seen aged 12, Hahah.

Scratched an itch couple years ago, and bought MK 6 GTI with 60k miles as second car for wife, and was super impressed with it, great build quality and really pulled strong, the only reason we moved it on was the media unit and overall lack of tech just became too much of a miss, and we too replaced that with a 2019 Golf R with all tech would ever need. MK 6 GTI was a brief experience, but can definitely see why some run them well into the 100k

I currently intend to keep my Ed40 as the sensible car in retirement, it doesn't get much use as I seem to be driving the sports cars more of late and using the free bus/train/tube pass.

A friend really wants my Golf in a deal against his 250 mile GR86, as tempting as it is I think I will hang on to the Golf?

When my 128Ti goes back next year, a ED40 is an outside replacement as my personal run around, does not have to be perfect or low mileage, so not looking for a keeper, as intend to keep my next car for 2-3 years and so will be driven without any thought to its future value, just needs to do its duties and provide some enjoyment also,

A 2017 > Golf R or GTI PP are in frame also, but if see a decent enough ED40 at my price point of sub £20k can see me being tempted to just enjoy one for a few years.

I think I was being sensible as my pension isn’t great and didn’t want to have to fork out any big bills, hadn’t spent anything in 8 years so thought my luck might run out . Had no paint on her or anything as well and thought perhaps best get rid before that happened as I’d be mortified.  Just seen what vertu Leeds have put her up for sale price and wish I’d stuck out for a bit more!! Picked polo up today and think my OH is sick of me saying .. ‘and it’s not got…. ‘
just keep saying to OH.. ‘ it’s not got ‘..

The deed is done then Pixwix.
I’m sure you’ll settle in to the new car soon enough. There are things the Polo won’t have but whether those features that it lacks you use much is another thing. Less to go wrong in any case!

How about a photo or ten of the Polo?

I for one get your line of thinking, get a simpler car to run on a lesser income and have less to worry about.
I’d be the same, possibly sooner rather than later!

Just about to do first wash Exonian…. Didn’t let garage do that. Just searching back for Booth11’s ‘new car wash schedule’ 😀.
Also my retirement plan is to travel more abroad, so strictly speaking car even less important.. (who am I kidding )

Going to be somewhere between £3k and £5k would be my guess.

Spot on Fredgroves!.. well about middle of those 2.
But they won’t need to spend much prepping.. might refurb front 2 wheels, I’ve never done them and at first they didn’t even spot curbing in one of them.. I rubbed back with very fine paper and lacquered mysrlf

Thats a typical markup on second hand cars from a reputable trader.

Thats not all profit either... a lot of costs rolled into that including money to cover the thing being a lemon and them needing to fix it. That add on money will also be averaged out across all of the sales.... some you win, some you lose and on average you are up...

It looks like a good buy with that mileage and obviously very well looked after. Buying a car like that from a VW dealer and you’ve got no worries for 2 years with the full warranty. Also if you get it on PCP you can get 2 services for free - well around £20 -£30 which is the cost of a couple of days interest before you pay it off!!

I’ve just bought a 68 plate GTI from VW and the prep was excellent, full service including Haldex, a brand new PZero to match the others as it has a nail in it, all four wheels refurbished to a superb standard and the water pump was also replaced.
Mine is a sort of pre retirement present to myself! Reckon I’ve got at most a couple of years before I hand in my notice so I’ll see what I do then, probably won’t be able to afford to have two cars then.

The Polo GTI looks to be a very good choice, you get so much more for your money age and mileage wise when compared to a second hand Golf. Just been and sat in a brand new Golf GTI in the local dealer, I’d always been out off them as I hate the very modern interior but I actually quite liked it. Looking round it though it seems to me to be not much different to the MK7 except for the dashboard. A bit like how the MK6 was more of an updated Mk5. To me the Mk7 was a massive leap forward but the Mk8 not so much. Anyway at £43k I think I’ll be sticking with what I’ve got for a while!
