Good point Adam.  By your reckoning how much do you think you could spend on extras before you hit the £40k limit?

Obviously it would also depend on the unlikely scenario where there are no further price increases before delivery.

The 1st year VED is £680 and the registration fee is £55, both are included in the price on the configurator so you can minus this off your total to see how close you are to £40k.

(This assumes VW correctly register the price at delivery - it presumably relies on them to notify the DVLA!)

Going to be interesting to see how vw implement the mandatory speed limiter... Whether it's possible to disable it with obd11

There’s an annoying speed limit warning / bong in the new ID4, which you have to disable on every journey, similar to lane assist. I presume the new Golf (exact same screen) is similar. I haven’t got around to trying obd11 in the ID4 yet.

Just a bong? I'd have thought it would have worked like the speed limiter function on my mk8... Not actually letting you go past the limit unless you kick down.

The bong system is also present on the Mk8 but I have that switched off and just have the visible warning (on my hud) which sometimes I pay attention to lol

If you can disable it every journey like lane assist, you should be able to configure it to remember being switched off with OBD11, as you can with lane assist (Kamikaze mode).
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

No it doesn't actually prevent the car from breaking the limit. That would be quite dangerous for all sorts of reasons I'd have thought. You just get the silly bong.

Fortunately it's a lot easier to switch these things off on the new infotainment screens compared to the MK8 screen. But I'll probably try OBD11 when I get around to it and see can it be permanently turned off.

I've never had any speed limit bong in my MK8. Maybe its something I've switched off in the settings!

The 8.5 R is rumoured to start from around £42,500 in the UK which is cheaper than the outgoing 8 R: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/363528/new-volkswagen-golf-r-gets-more-power-help-slay-its-hot-hatch-rivals

Wonder what that means for the upcoming Clubsport?!

Press the assist button (on the dash), press on traffic sign and you'll see speed limit warning - can be off/visible/audible.

You can also set the threshold - 0, 3 or 5mph (over the limit)

It sort of remembers your choice.... sort of. Sometimes chooses to forget what you've set!

Basically it sounds like they have just gone with making that default to on with those settings every time you start the car.

Along the whole sorry story of Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) the EU have changed both dates and requirements. They initially wanted it to be hard enforcement but decided that at least for the first phase (ie now, but already delayed by 2 years!) its just got to provide the driver with one of four different types of feedback. Apparently they are going to use telematics to discover how effective it was - how often drivers break the speed limit and how often they turn off the system!

On the Mk8 you do have a speed limiter function that does physically limit your speed. Its hard to turn on (fiddly), needs turning on every time you start the car and also doesn't appear to be speed limit aware (you have to manually adjust it to the limit as you enter and exit speed limit zones)

Its not "dangerous" by the way, you can exceed the limiter just by kicking down on the gas... so speed as an avoidance technique is still available - likely as not in those cases you'd stamp the gas anyhow!

Massive price increases but expected. To make the car look good you’ll have to add the alloys and DCC as a minimum straight over the £40k mark. Massive tax hits every year for 5 years and you know this is going to even further skywards when new government change. Massive losses once out of showroom you only have to look at the drops of the cars and the fact that VW still can’t clear the R stock. It’s all very depressing but I won’t be buying one. I’m not a millionaire and don’t intend to lose money like this. Shame but reality I suppose.

Looks like DrivetheDeal have updated their prices today and an extra £500 off the Golf due to VW increasing their deposit contribution. GTI 8.5 with almost £6k off now with prices after discount at £33,195.

Even though I just bought a 7.5, I'm tempted by this!
