In total I paid £600 for my R’s road tax this year. I assume the GTIs emissions are lower and make it slightly cheaper. It went up £30 in April compared to the the letter which was £570.

CO2 emissions only relevant for the first years road tax - 162g/km = £670

Then years 2-5 it will be £600 total (£190 + >£40k surcharge of £410) same as your R

You're talking about having a progressive tax system where the rich pay more tax than the poor overall.

It makes perfect sense but it's not the way things work in the UK.  Here billionaires pay nothing and the poor pay about 20% of their earnings and pay VAT on almost everything they buy.

It's just a bit sh!t isn't it

You do know you'll be paying an extra £410 per year for the first five years road tax right?

Yep, fully aware

Rather think that the £40k figure should be index linked, but them's the rules

I somehow don’t think the £40k figure will be increased any time soon - maybe never. By leaving it at £40k, more and more motorists get hit by the enhanced VED rate as car manufacturers continue to increase their vehicle list prices 2-3 times a year. An easy revenue generator for HM Gov.

It used to be referred to as a luxury tax on the gov.uk website but any reference to ‘luxury’ disappeared off the website some time ago. So at least there’s an acknowledgment that a car with a list price of £40k isn’t a luxury car.

Sadly, I agree that this is likely very true

And…..for those like me who might have considered an Approved Used 8.5 to change to in a couple of years, the 5 year tax take is another future discouragement to let go of what I’ve got.
I wonder if, sadly, we  have passed “peak” GTI with the 8.5?

And….. my son had a hired Quashqai home from work. When you see the level of equipment these “ordinary” cars are offering now, it makes one look again at VW and ask some questions about VFM. Admittedly, I have no idea how these things drive but you can see how they are built for “showroom” appeal.

The 40k tax limit excludes the first year VED and first year registration which is included in the price on the VW website. So we have slightly more to spend on extras without hitting it!

Agree that the colour options are really disappointing...I think I'm going to go for Dolphin Grey. Will be ordering via drive the deal first thing tomorrow

The colour choice on the Mk8 was just as appalling too. I actually wanted a battleship grey car but otherwise I'd have been stuck.

Dolphin Grey is by far the best colour for the MK8 GTI. I'm having it now. No photo or video can explain how gorgeous and luxurious the colour really is.

Though, if I go with MK8.5, I will probably opt for Kings Red with black roof and Black Style package. Kings red looks so sleek with new black style darkened front optics. And you obviously don't need a red stripe in front when your car is red.

But will see, will be curious to see Crystal Ice Blue in person as well.

That's good to know, thanks.

I agree that red with the darkened option would look really good but as someone else pointed out, they've got the pricing for that option totally wrong - it includes matrix headlights which are part of the base build already.

Got a trade in quote for my 7.5 GTI PP from a dealer, as I'm really tempted to get a 8.5 as it's within budget with the DTD discount. Really like the look of it. Only bought the 7.5 3 months ago and it's already dropped £3,300 compared with what I paid. Can't get myself to trade it in yet with that loss. I think the more sensible plan would be to keep it 18 months or so more as it's under warranty and has got 2 years free servicing and then trade it in for the 8.5.

Looking forward to hearing about everyone's experience/reviews of the 8.5 in the meantime!

Yeah, but be aware that Dolphin Grey is great only when fully cleaned  . Even a little rain + dust , and it becomes "another" grey colour. But when it's cleaned, omg, can't take your eyes off.
