That’s a very nice “stealth black” look……and quite a contrast to a very high mileage Tiguan!

Yes, it will be a bit of a contrast  but a change in circumstances means my work commute is now a 10 minute walk instead of a 100 mile round trip, so this GTi will just be driven for pleasure and enjoyment (and cover considerably less than 25,000 miles a year )

You do know you'll be paying an extra £410 per year for the first five years road tax right?

I've been quoted an optimistic 12 weeks but the online quote I got for comparison were quoting 24 weeks, so I guess it will take as long as it takes

By the way the numbers on the online quote vs the dealers numbers were close enough for me to stay local, where I now have a 'relationship'

Yep, fully aware

Rather think that the £40k figure should be index linked, but them's the rules

As well as trading in the Tiguan I'll also be moving on my R53 Mini which I'm currently paying £415 a year on anyway, so I wont be much worse off...

I somehow don’t think the £40k figure will be increased any time soon - maybe never. By leaving it at £40k, more and more motorists get hit by the enhanced VED rate as car manufacturers continue to increase their vehicle list prices 2-3 times a year. An easy revenue generator for HM Gov.

It used to be referred to as a luxury tax on the gov.uk website but any reference to ‘luxury’ disappeared off the website some time ago. So at least there’s an acknowledgment that a car with a list price of £40k isn’t a luxury car.

In total I paid £600 for my R’s road tax this year. I assume the GTIs emissions are lower and make it slightly cheaper. It went up £30 in April compared to the the letter which was £570.

I got the same letter, but by the time it arrived, the prevailing rate was £600. They need to do something about a tax that a fairly regular car pays the same VED as a Bugatti Chiron, and for 5 years after 1st registration year. I paid £38k for my S3, with an RRP of £43.5k, so it never even cost £40k. If they want to rinse everyone, why not put an arbitrary cost of 0.5% of RRP per year out there? That way a £2m car pays a lot more than a £40k car that you might not have even paid £40k for (and won't be worth £40k after 1st year).
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
MK7 R 5 door, manual, Lapiz Blue, Prets.

You're talking about having a progressive tax system where the rich pay more tax than the poor overall.

It makes perfect sense but it's not the way things work in the UK.  Here billionaires pay nothing and the poor pay about 20% of their earnings and pay VAT on almost everything they buy.
