Climate screen - do they work?
« on: 31 August 2023, 16:41 »
I was just wondering if anyone here who has the climate screen option can give me a real-world idea of whether it actual works to keep the interior cooler than not having one.

My queries come from the fact I’m pretty certain that the issues I have with the damage to my interior trim is directly related to expose to direct sunlight while parked up.

Further to my initial issues where some of the matt finish has lifted around the cup holder area I now have bubbling along the two ‘cheek’ pieces that run alongside the centre console – this bubbling appears when sunlight hits it, if I cover the area with a cloth of put up a reflective sun-screen then the issue is vastly reduced.

I’m not impressed with this on a four year old car – I know you guys have said it won’t be covered but I do still have six months left on my extended manufactures warranty so I think I’m going to at least ask – if it’s turned down then I’m going to have to have the bits replaced as I can see the soft-touch trim bits eventually peeling off.

My other idea was to consider one of the new front tints that look the same as the OE blueish reflective ones on many new VAG cars have – my issue with is that I have to have a couple of permits stuck to my window screen so I guess they won’t work long-term if applied on top of a tint.

If all else fails then I don’t know if it was possible to replace my normal screen (only when it was needed due to chips) with a factory climate screen just for the passive reflective properties – is this even possible?

Maybe I’ve just been unlucky as I haven’t used anything harsh on the trim only my Koch Chemie Top Star.

Sorry but I’m desperate – every time I get in all I can see is the bubbling centre trim and as this is my ‘keeper’ car then I really want it looking good.

I have Climate Screen fitted, (touching wood) no issues with trim deterioration. Great for clearing frost as well.
I can’t say if it’s the panacea of avoiding trim damage, but my car is parked outside where the front trim gets the midday sun and it doesn’t seem to get as hot as previous cars.

Never noticed a difference between normal windscreen ad the climate, but I also leave the sunroof in the lifted position on hot days.

Window Deflectors and leave the side open a hair would be a good option, as it will actually increase airflow, you'll still get heat with tinted windows.

According to VW the Climate Screen blocks 60% of the summer heat - take that with any size of pinch of salt you wish.
To be honest, I only ticked the option box for the defrost function, if it was for cooling only, wouldn’t have bothered. I’ve parked multiple cars in the same position over the past 27 years with no issues.

I have the climate screen and can't objectively say if I've noticed it keeping the car cooler on hot days than any other car I've had.

Like Adam I chose it for the heating function and I'm happy with it for that purpose.

Many thanks all.

Maybe I've just been unlucky but if I go to the cost of replacing the trim parts then I'd like to avoid a repeat in the future but folding out my reflective sunscreen each time seems seriously uncool.

When summer comes to my neck of the woods all the midlands badboi brigade rock up ready to be ripped off on their British beach caravan holiday.
The last couple of years I’ve noticed a lot of these lads sporting orange tinted windscreens that I’ll assume are supposed to replicate the tints in expensive sports sunglasses(?)
While some of these screens are quite heavily tinted somewhat to excess like their decatted down pipes and wives lips that look like they’ve been kissing angry wasps, others are quite subtle and I’d imagine that if the tints are from reputable suppliers they’d knock out a lot of UV rays similar to the fancy expensive sunglasses they share their colour with.

Just thinking it could be a cheaper option than a climate screen retrofit.

Yep I've been looking at those especially the blueish tint that looks OE, couple of things.... there still seems to be a lot of questions over legality over the aftermarket tints even though some look the same as factory fit, secondly as I mentioned I need to stick two very sticky permits to my screen and I've no idea if this will work long term on a film applied to the rear of the screen.

Might just resort to a large microfibre cloth draped over the centre console when it gets very hot.
