What does tour speedo go up to?
« on: 21 October 2005, 09:50 »
My 8V speedo only reads up to 120mph. Just had a look on volkswizard and he's got an 8v with 140mph on the clock. Anyone any idea why this is?

I also have a 8v Gti, 120mph on the clocks.

Prety sure that the 140mph clocks will have been a replacement item from the 16v Gti.

16v clocks go up to 160mph
I'm not sure but I think 8v clocks may have been changed to 140mph late on in the models life, maybe by then they had realised a well run in 8v could quite easily pin the speedo needle! What year was the one on wizard???

I can't work out why they put 160mph clocks in the 16v's

I know they're not exactly slow   but that's being a tad optimistic, or was it all part of the sales pitch? "Ooohh, look at that..the clocks say 160mph. Best get one!"

Seriously tho..does anyone know why??

The one on Volkswizard is an H reg, mines a J reg and like i say only reads 120mph. Maybe mines got a replacement clock off an older car or something, wouldn't surprise me, everything else has been changed!!

Some 8vs got a 140 mph speedo, I assume the 16v had to have a 160mph speedo so it looks like it'll go faster than the 8v ;)

I can't work out why they put 160mph clocks in the 16v's

when i first had my 16v in the early 90s i had her showing 143. if i had of had the balls and the petrol i would of red lined her to see what would happen. the rev counter was showing 7150 at the time so only had another 150rpm to go before the limiter spoilt the show. i was considering it but the trip was giving 1.8miles to the gallon. if the needle was accurate i was covering 1 mile every 25 seconds, which gave me approx 3 minutes of petrol on board at the time.

i doubt though whether 143 was real though despite what the needle was showing although checking it last year it does get scarily accurate when pushing on at 120+.
