Looking for some friendly advice
« on: 24 March 2023, 21:29 »
I'm already predicating this post to get a bit out of hand so apologies in advance.

I currently own a 2020 i30n which I've only owned for around 2 months, prior to that I had a 3dr Up GTI which I had fairly heavily modified which I loved. Before that I had a Mk7 GTI DSG which was by far the best car I've ever owned! My situation changed which required me to get a bigger car, hence the i30.

I'm just not getting on with the car the same way I did with the previous 2, the test drive was fun and it is a nice car to be in but I just don't feel that connection. I don't get into it thinking "I'm looking forward to this" where as with the previous 2, Golf especially, I really did.

So my question is, what do I do? Do I stick it out? Or do I take the life is too short approach and chop it in for another Mk7/7.5?

Strongest contender I've found so far;
2016 PP which has done just over 40k and is listed at 19,995

I think many/most of us can relate to your predicament.
A Golf to many of us feels like “home”.
Some people are so blinkered by VW’s they can’t see any further than that and that’s fine, we are all different. Some people like to keep standard, some people like to modify…

The i30N is something we’ve all read about and watched reviews on, and to those of us that quite like a modified Golf it’s got that appeal of seemingly a more rorty version of a GTI out of the box as standard. But, it’s not a Golf and to some/many that’s unimportant, and to others it’ll be lacking that ingredient X that makes a Golf GTI what it is.

I’d have honestly imagined that the i30N would have been a car you would have looked forward to every drive in but I do get that connection thing.
I bought an F40 M135i because I thought it was a better Golf than VW made and I still do, and yet I only kept that car a very short time before returning to a Golf. Admittedly it was for more complex reasons than merely missing a Golf but it was a Golf that I did return to and have never regretted that one iota.

As I see it you have the option of giving it more time to see if you and the Hyundai eventually gel which I doubt will happen, but if you do return to a Golf, make sure it’s the right Golf for you.

The 2016 GTI sounds interesting. Not too many miles, old enough to justify lightly modifying it, especially as things start to require replacing they can be upgraded. Well out of warranty so therefore begging for a remap.
But would you regret not waiting for a 7.5 GTI to become available?

When I was looking for a GTI I set myself a budget but I really wanted an Edition 40 Clubsport but they were out of my set budget unfortunately.

I kept my eyes out on CS40s for sale after my other half said your only here once and if its what you want, why settle for a GTI when it's the CS40 you really want, etc, etc.

Needless to say i bought a CS40 and never regretted it, would I have always lust after a CS40 if I had bought a GTI - probably.

If your unhappy with your i30N and your into your cars you'll never really gel with it, get something you really want, were not here on a dress rehearsal as far as I know.

Morning all, great advice all round! It's annoying because I really wanted to like the i30 and it's even more frustrating because I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that I'm not enjoying!

It's got a lot of spec and the exhaust sounds great but I'm not sure, there's just something about it that I can't get into a rhythm with.

I do sometimes wonder if I should just go and buy my Up back!

I think you've grown accustom to the grown up feeling of the Volkswagen range, was in a friends Mk4 V5 a while ago and despite it being 20+ years old it still felt everything a golf is, and not aged badly inside.

The i30n is an occasion car, where you drive a work van or beater during the week and jump into it at the weekend and yob about, same can be said for the Yaris GR & most Porsches.

The golf gti is the car that does everything whenever you need it, put the dog in the back no problem, moving house no problem, hitting the back roads, no problem. Unless you went for a 6 cylinder 3 series touring you won't get much better and even then you sacrifice handy parking!

Send it up the road, if you don't like it now you won't like it in a year.

The main reason I bought it to be fair was for putting a dog in the back, the 3dr up was a nightmare for getting him in and out of the back seats so something bigger and 5dr made sense. I just wish I'd used my brain a bit more and thought of a Golf then rather than now!

I understand what your saying about the I30N

A few years ago I was all for putting a deposit down on a I30N, I liked the idea, how it came about with the BMW guy, and read all the reviews, however after a test drive I wasn't so keen.

Lots of parts were likeable about it but underneath they didn't add up to a better car than I was driving. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't object to it sitting on my drive but I couldn't really put my finger on it.  I did think the suspension was a little primitive not sure if it was just the stiffness or (kinematics??), and the torque steer was very old school, but loved the 'N' button placement, Infotainment, exhaust etc and the looks. If you don't like it then life is too short, lots of cars are ok but you can't gel with them all. Perhaps gone on a driving Holiday?  Nothing like spending 6-8 hours a day in a car driving some great roads in Europe.

It's good to try something different so perhaps it was the best thing to have bought the i30N but now you realise that it's a Golf that you really want. It boils down to money at the end of the day so if you can afford to change then just do it. You enjoy driving so pointless having something that you're not happy with. Have a good test drive first though just in case it's just nostalgia drawing you back!

Personally I'd say for a daily get a 7.5 as it feels just a bit more modern but they are both great cars so get one and enjoy!

So a very positive update to this, I've actually had a bid on the car via Motorway that's £500 over what I've paid for it so I think that's pretty much sealed the deal for me tbh!

It now just comes down to what replace it with but I do feel like a weight has been lifted as I was worried that I was going to be stuck with something I wasn't happy with.

I really appreciate the input everyone has had here, definitely helped me feel more at ease with the situation as it was frustrating me that I couldn't figure out why I'm so unhappy with the car. Sounds like others have experienced the same and it's not just me being an idiot!
