Mk 7.5 GTI PP Road Noise?
« on: 20 January 2023, 12:19 »
I bought my 19 GTI PP in October and not long after I bought it I noticed as the speed increased, there was a noise from the rear of the car.  It took nearly 2 months to get VW dealer to look at it as they were so busy and they changed the wheel bearings. If I am honest, the noise is still there, I had a BMW before and it was very quiet when you went along the road, the Golf isnt like that at all.  I am going to get it back in but has anyone had the same issue and got a solution, or a suggestion to give to the dealer, it's very frustrating as I do like the car

How old are the tyres?    It could be uneven wear?  Have you tried switching fronts to the rear, to see if it makes any difference?

Agree, sounds like it could be the inner edge of the rear tyres wearing in a stepped, sawtooth pattern. I had this on my mk5 Golf and it did sound like worn wheel bearings.

@AMG01; if it is sawtooth tyre wear, you can often see it. If not, you can probably feel it if you run your hand around the inside edge of the rear tyres.

You can see examples of it in the pictures below;

2020 Polo GTI Plus; Pure White, DSG (because they all are)
Gone but not forgotten;
2016 Polo GTI; Blue Silk
2011 mk6 Golf GTD; Carbon Grey
2007 mk5 Golf GT (2.0 170bhp TDI version); Deep Black Pearl
2002  mk4 Golf GTI (the 150 bhp diesel version); Deep Black Pearl

The mk7/7.5 doesn't really suffer with saw tooth rears like the mk5. I've had mk7 gtd, mk7 GTi pp and now my TCR and never had saw tooth rears. I do however check my tyre pressures regularly.

Rear noise and stepping can be rear suspension factory set up problems. On previous marks it required a hunter type suspension realignment to sort our. I believe rear suspension is quite sensitive to small setup errors. Worth changing wheels front to rear as suggested to see if this sorts it. If it does then try the full suspension diagnostic such as hunter to cure it..

Also seem to reading quite a few threads where drivers have had their tyres fitted incorrectly with 'outside' ending up on the inside.

I had the same issue last year. Road noise was terrible and assumed the worst. Popped into ATS just to check any issues with the tyres, Put the car on the ramp and sure enough both rears were stepped. It was on the inside so could'nt really see anything. Plenty of tread remaining and always checking my pressures so my thoughts were mechanical. Changed them for new and bingo I can hear the wife whinging again. :laugh:

Previous rides..MKIV 1.8T   MKIV PD150  MK5 GTI MK5 edition30 now MK7 GTI PP

Errr yes it definitely does!

And likely as not it will occur before the tread depth is anywhere near the legal limit - the car is super light on its rear tyre usage.

I saw problems at around 55k on both of mine - the tyres probably could have lasted another 20k except for the insane noise.
