Saying goodbye to Golf GTI
« on: 15 December 2022, 09:11 »
I've had my Golf Gti since May 2022 bought new with 19" wheels and winter pack.
After 8 months and much deliberation I have decided to part company with it.
I've enjoyed the drive, but a smile on my face with a blast down a good A or B road but I can't live with the controls made even worse with the winter. I'm finding I'm taking my eyes off the road when making changes for example   car temperature,  heated seats, phone calls. I thought I would get used to the touch controls but having had a few near misses I have took the decision to trade it in.
Then what to replace it with?

Then what to replace it with?

Something with buttons presumably , seriously though can't go wrong with a BMW or a Mk7.5 golf
Mk7.5 GTI - Performance Pack, DSG, Sunroof, Dynaudio, Pro Nav, Vienna Leather, Climate Windscreen & last of the 3 doors....Many Sets of Alloys...

Prev - Mk7.5 White Silver, Vienna Leather, Sunroof, Helix Sub, Many Wheels

Many car manufacturers are going the same way with the lack of buttons etc. In the mk8 I agree eyes are sometimes off the road for too long when adjusting climate control but once you are used to it and have it set up the way you want you only really need to adjust temp and fan speed. Rear window heating, max fan speed to defog windows are both available at the touch of a button, amongst others. Not lighting up the volume bar and temp control below the infotainment was daft from VW but, again, once used to it you know exactly where it is so no big deal. The hardest thing to operate while driving solo is the sat nav, trying to zoom in and out is a hazard I must my admit. All it really needs is a volume knob which would also double as a sat nav zoom in and out and I'd be happy with it. Everything else such as phone, android auto operation is really no different from the mk 7.5 in terms of being a distraction/eyes off the road. Having stuck with the mk8 I now really like the minimalist interior and I think I would find the mk7.5 interior a bit of a step back.

In complete contrast, I really like my Mk8 GTI and was over the moon to have sold my 2020 M135i xDrive back to Cotswold bmw in order to get it, sure the BMW was built really well and was quality, but boy was it dull!

I really like the look of the new Honda type R but was hoping for something closer to £40k, no such look, but still getting calls from the salesman I enquired with so don’t think they are all sold yet.

Gonna stay put with the CS it’s looking like a bargain now at the low 30s i paid for it.

Looking to stay under the 40k
Don’t want to pay the higher road tax.
Interesting comment about bmw 135i been locking at the 128ti
Really liked the drive of the golf but just can’t get away with the touch controls
Might be a age thing.

It’ll probably be a “good riddance” to your cars from yourselves Stuart and buttons. No car is for everyone.

I gelled with the mk8 really quickly much to my surprise as I expected to dislike it.
I actually like the minimalist interior and when I borrow my son’s 71 plate Ibiza on occasion I don’t find the buttons for the climate control etc any easier than the screen and dash pod touch pads.
Real buttons on the steering wheel would be nice as I hate haptic pads but the centre screen is quite good for myopic old gits like myself with decently sized icons.

Yep, the random bings and bongs get on my tits, the lack of illuminated volume control is daft, plus I do try not to change too many settings on the fly anyway for safety reasons, and the voice control is worse than useless in the mk8. Plus the looks are a bit iffy from some angles (being polite), but…  generally I like the car very much.

All the best for your next cars Stuart and buttons, they’re expensive purchases so it’s important that they give you what you want out of them.  :afro:

I have just changed from mk7.5 performance to a mk8  and did find the lack of buttons a bit strange and takes a bit to get used to but so far it seems to works pretty well🤞 build quality not as good as mk7.5 imo but the tech is very good when you get used to it.
I looked at lots of other cars to replace my mk7.5 with as mentioned above but nothing else seem ed to tick all the boxes like a gti does so this is my 3rd GTi now and no regrets so far.
