£75 for the finest LingLong tyre around

New LingLong and a new wheel. 🤗 At least it’s not a DingDong! You can find wheels with Contis on them but you’ll pay a lot more and it won’t be a new wheel. I haven’t seen many articles discussing the handling characteristics of space savers. They are limited to 50 mph for a reason.  Emergencies only!

Exactly they don't need to be a Conti you may never use! Just funny.

Right I'm searching YT... I can't believe someone somewhere hasn't fitted four space-savers to their car and ragged it!

Wouldn't say they were space savers but a fiesta (1999 1 litre) I used to drive had wheels that weren't much bigger and it near went over a hedge on dry summers day...a few times

I swapped out a space saver to a full size alloy on a Discovery a few years back - literally couldn’t give the space saver away and had to take it to the local tip for disposal - they are not the most popular car related items in the world.

Thank you to willni who tried his 7.5 space saver 125 x 70 x 18 and tools in the wheel well of my Mk 8 to confirm they fitted. I have now got a wheel and tools in my car. I bought a new wheel for £75 from eBay and the tools for £70. I also bought the large centre plastic wheel retainer (screw) for £20. I can also confirm my rear panel at the boot lock did not need to be changed to accommodate the 18” wheel. My car had the curved panel as standard.  I now have a spare panel if anyone needs one, although I don’t know why you would. 😂. All in £165 which I think is money well spent if you ever need to use it. Another one of the cost savings employed by VW on the Mk 8.

Her it is the wrong way round. The centre retaining screw doesn’t catch.

What do VW charge for it new?

485 I was quoted told them I didn't want  set of alloys just one space saver!

I was quoted pretty much the same amount and total rip off imo
I ended up buying off ebay for less than £100....not new but you can tell it is unused and included the tools/retainer screw.

A good purchase. That was a keen price. They are a personal choice. I once gave a space saver wheel away (for a Honda Civic) as nobody wanted it and I had thought it was going to the local tip. The recipient made a small donation to a charity in lieu of payment as the best way for me to get some good from it. As I said before, the first time you have to use the space saver, it  pays for itself.

You are right as I needed to use one just after lockdown hit as I had a unrepairable puncture and it was 3 days before they could get the new tyre in. As my workplace was staying open I opted to bung the space saver on until they got the new tyre in and I will always make sure I have one in what ever car I have one way or another.

As good as a spare wheel is on its own, when going to the trouble of getting one I think you should also invest in a good high vis jacket ideally waterproof! and a torch that can stand by itself.

Not all flat tyres will happen on a dry afternoon, and at night a high vis can makes a massive difference between being seen or being hit.
