Clutch pedal sticking on the way up
« on: 06 November 2022, 17:52 »
My car seems to have developed an issue with the clutch, i wasn't sure i was imagining at fiirst but occasionally the pedal would come back up about 90% and there would be a slight delay for the pedal to come back up the final bit.

Today I parked up outside the shop, and when I released the clutch after pulling up the pedeal stayed down slightly and I was able to pull up the last bit by hand.

The clutch seems fine in operation otherwise and the car has done 43,000 miles.

Is this a hydraulic issue developing?

If so I am going to sell it, I have just about had enough with it and the niggles. :(

I’m guessing it’s one of the hydraulic cylinders, wife’s Polo had a similar issue.
Can’t comment on the Golf but on the Polo there are two, one necessitated a gearbox removal (changed the clutch at the same time as it made sense)

That is what I was thinking, knowing my luck it will be the slave inside the bell housing.

The last time that I owned a Golf it was a 2001 V5 aound 12 years ago, and back then I had lots of issues with it.

I was hoping that things may have improved since then but judging my the faults I have had with my car that doesn't seem to be the case. :(

Back to BMW for me next time I think.

could be air, as normally when the slave goes which is inside the gearbox the clutch falls to the floor and wont come up, if yours is 90% up I would say have it bled first, our slave failed a few weeks back with only 25k on the clock, which cost £332.50 to fix

Did a Tiguan a while back with a similar issue where the pedal stayed down, changed the clutch master cylinder and it cured it.

Thanks guys, i am fairly handy with a spanner so I am sure I could change the master cylinder. I take it that the slave is a concentric type?

I see both sorts listed for the GTI?

I don't fancy crawling about on the floor doing a clutch and concentric slave job myself though, especially at this time of the year.

The other thing that is bothering me is that I have a couple of 150 mile round trips planned this week. I hope it holds up...

The master cylinder comes out with the clutch pedal from inside the car, removing the fluid feed pipe, slave cylinder feed and, IIRC, a 4 pin plug is done from the engine bay and a bit fiddly.

Slave is in the bellhousing.

I have just been outside. I cannot see any leaks anywhere and the fluid level hasn't dropped.

A couple of years ago this happened to the clutch on my Mrs' Alfa. It was an LUK/Valeo and was fitted than 3 years and 18000 miles  previously.

On top of this issue I think the waterpump is leaking and the rear suspension is banging like a s**thouse door in the wind. :(

I had the pedal almost stick to the floor on my drive today once in a 120mile around trip.

I don't really have the money to get it fixed at the moment, so it looks like it may have to go. :(
