New tyres 225 or 235
« on: 25 February 2022, 12:18 »
It's time for new tyres, after research especially on this forum I'm going for michelin ps4s.
They are going on 19" Brescia rims which have 225/35.
Question is has anyone put 235/35 on this rim ?
I ask because the 235 are alot cheaper than 225?
Tyre place said it would work but might affect the speedo reading.
What's everyone's thought? Should I do it or stick with original size 225/35 and pay more?
Collected and being driven....... Gti PP 5dr DSG Tornado red, tints and Brescia's.

The speed reading will be changed slightly. The 35 figure is the % of the width of the tyre that is the height so the wider tyre will have higher sidewalls so lower speed reading by about 4%. Can't comment on any other factor of handling etc.
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.

I've done it, mainly to protect the rims a bit better, and because I like the looks.
Looks real good and I've noticed no real difference in any other way.
Spedo is ever so slightly off (spedo =69, GPS =70) compared with waze\gps but it wasn't 100% before anyway.
Mine are the Brescia wheels with PS4s too.

I am also considering a 235 when I next need tyres, mainly due to the enhanced rim protection!

Adding a little to the tyre research on the forum, did anyone else see this?

It would appear Continental have produced a new champion, in the Sport Contact 7.

Interested to hear how they perform on a Golf.

It's important to note they haven't reviewed the Michelin PS5 in that group, as well as the tyre size is 255/35R19 which doesn't always translate the same performance to other sizes.

Rim protection is always a good thing.  It's good to know also it improves appearance.
Most people say Michelin's are more comfortable than Pirelli's.

the tyres tested on that car won't necessarily perform the same in golf sizes.
