Is there any way to know if dipped beams are on?
« on: 24 February 2022, 15:32 »
I leave my headlights on auto 99% of the time, and regularly find myself b!tching at people who, in drizzly or misty weather, have no lights on at all. This invariably leads to me wondering whether the auto mode has deemed it dark enough to put the lights on, and I switch them to manual.

As far as I can tell, there is no dipped headlight symbol that comes on when the lights are actually on, in auto mode.

I have coded my rear lights to be on as DRLs as well, so I'm not too worried about those. It's the front in weather that is light, but probably worthy of headlights.

Now I think about it, I have also coded my fogs to be on with DRLs as well, so it's probably not a problem for anyone to see me. However, I would like to make sure my own house is in order before throwing stones, as it were.

An easy way to tell is to switch the Nav on and see if it goes dark.

Doesn’t the green light on the light switch illuminate when they are on? - sure mine does.

Pretty sure when set to Auto, the light switch symbol changes colour when the headlights actually switch on (I'll check on my way home tonight)

Not a Golf, but in my 2020 Polo GTI+ where I also always have the lights set to ‘auto, when the lights are on the parking / sidelight symbol on the light switch turns green, the symbols on the steering wheel buttons illuminate and so do the heating / ventilation controls.

Maybe the Golf does the same?

If you try main headlight beam, not the flash position, the blue dash light will illuminate if auto has activated.

The light on my switch is on all the time, as far as I can tell. I wonder if the coding of the rear lights to be always on cou ld have changed this behaviour. I'm pretty sure it's always been like that, though.

If memory serves from mine;

Auto = front DRL's only until sensor switches headlights on.
Image @ 1o'clock - If left on "auto" will turn green when headlights are on. If switched is turned to 1o'clock position then it will enable front sidelights (DRL) and rear lights.
Image @ 2o'clock - Only lights up when switch is turned manually to that position.

Right, I'll keep an eye on this, thanks
