GTI Calliper slide pins
« on: 03 February 2022, 13:08 »
HI guys, I'm looking to remove and inspect and if necessary replace the rear pads on my GTI. I have my OBDEleven to put the callipers into their service position, and also have a piston rewind tool. The only thing I can't get a definitive answer on is whether the sliding pins need lubricating when putting them back in or not ?

I've looked on line and there seems to be contradicting information - anyone know for sure, and if yes, what grease should I use ?

I lubricate the slider pins  every 2nd service with silicone grease. Definitely do it when changing pads.

Ditto the other responses. Silicon grease whenever the calipers get serviced. If heavy brake use then every year before the MOT.

There is only ONE grease to use...I've tried all the other types & they failed & caused more problems in the calipers sticking.

TRW make a specific grease for their callipers called PFG-110..use this only for the slide pins/boots.

For the pad to caliper contact areas, e.g pad ears, backs etc use either the VW "hot bolt paste" or Loctite Heavy Duty LB8009

Loads of info in my build thread when I found out the hard way about "ceramic greases"...all the relevant posts on this page

You'll also need special short hex sockets to undo & torque up the calipers due to the way the calipers are very close to the suspension...

I got these:-

again all info in that build page of mine that I linked too above
