Year 3 service - Major or Minor
« on: 04 November 2020, 15:30 »
My year 3 service and MOT is coming up soon, when looking at booking online I was shown straight to a major service at £349!!!  Is it a major service on year 3?  I've kept with whatever regime the car came set to.

I just had my 3-year service and they only did the engine oil & filter and brake fluid. I only have 19k on mine and I think it's the mileage that determines whether it needs a major service or not.

Have you had annual services previously? How much/which were they?
If it's on annual servicing I think it alternates between minor and major.

Whichever service it is, if year three service means the car is three years old, then it’ll also be due a brake fluid change which is chargeable in addition to the cost of the service.

If the car’s been serviced annually and it’s now coming up to three years old, it’ll be a minor service (as @jv has said, they alternate between minor and major). However, if you’re on flexible / long life servicing the car could go up to two years / 18k miles before it indicates a service is due, and because of the longer time/distance since the last service, maybe each long life service is treated as a major one (I don’t know if this is the case as I’m on annual, time and distance servicing).

If it is a minor service that’s required and the online booking system is forcing you to book a major service, maybe it’d be better to speak to the dealer’s service team rather than use the online booking facility.

I’ve had a service every year, if I check the service section under the car menu it’s counting down to the next oil change (currently about 30 days). I will try and find what I paid over the last two services. I was planning to ask for the brake fluid to be changed at the same time and pay the extra charge.

Thanks for the pointers.

Mine is 3 years old (17k mileage) and on annual servicing, last year was a major so it is a minor this year for me.

Purely by chance I had a call from the VW dealer, they confirmed it was a minor service this time

At 3 years old, why are you going to the dealers?
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
