7 7.5 PP ?
« on: 31 January 2020, 14:40 »
Currently have a 61plate mk6 GTi and looking to change to a 3-4 year old mk7 GTi with under 30k miles but looking for some advice from current owners.

Is it worth waiting a bit longer for a 7.5 not so many available and prices are higher?
PP is it worth getting or in day to day use would never notice?
Heated screen which option packs did it come in?

Thanks in advance

The 7 is prettier but the 7.5 is worth waiting for.
The 245bhp GTI Performance is the sweet spot in the “Performance Golf” range.

The PP is well worth having. Ignore the extra 10 or 15 bhp, it’s meaningless, but the bigger brakes are very good in general use and the diff adds a whole different dimension to the handling.

Heated screens are fairly rare options but easy to spot as the windscreen has a yellowish tint.

I had a pair of mk6 GTI’s, there are a few steps down in certain areas when it comes to the mk7, the panels are thinner and the steering wheel not as nice. Performance possibly slightly better with the 7 but driving dynamics are improved quite a bit with the PP added.
Oh, and the interior ambient lights are a welcome surprise when moving from a Mk5 or mk6.
The interior embellishments of the 7.5 are even better (and I was previously the biggest sceptic of this) and my advice is to buy as recent a model as you possibly can as the late model cars are loaded with kit :afro:

Heated screen was only in conjunction with the advanced phone prep on Mk7, hence not may people specced it. On Mk7.5 it is a standalone option, to my knowledge it's never been part of a pack.

Infotainment (digital dash and media screen) is better in the 7.5, you also get Android Auto and CarPlay as standard. Without Nav Pro its a paid option on Mk7, but can be added later on MY2016 (built June 15) cars onwards.

Whether the PP is worth it will depend on how keen a driver you are. As Exonian said, it's all about the brakes and the diff.

If the budget will stretch, personally i'd go for a Mk7.5, as it's just more up to date.

Slightly off topic but why do people get so hung up on mileage when looking for a car? I'd rather buy on condition and history, I also try and do a bit of digging into the previous owner.

I've no doubt my car at 70k miles and 4 years old people wouldn't even entertain it but it gets more attention than the missus does - much to her annoyance.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback  and I agree condition, service history is more important but the only reason I mentioned mileage is I tend to keep my cars for 5/6 years and don't want to have v high mileage at sale time.

Looks like I will hang off for a 7.5 when more come off PCP possibly a PP but doubt I would notice it much with most of my driving.

I find Android Auto just annoying. Don't have it on my own MK7 PP, but do on our newer Mondeo and it just ruins what is otherwise a nice to use Ford Sync 3 system. I don't do Apple products.

I'd go for a MK7 PP with an uprated clutch, quick throw gear linkage and remap. That is the car that the GTI should have been from the factory. In sports mode it is a revelation and will still return low 30s mpg in eco mode, which is still quick compared to the standard car.

Happy shopping.

Deal done today Grey 66 plate mk7 Nav + winter pack with 21k on the clock . Happy with the price to change and looking forward to picking it up next week. Very nice to drive but the auto hand brake and auto park is going to take a while to sink in!

Agree with comment above the steering wheel on the mk6 does feel better.
