Can i get good sound without a decat??
« on: 12 January 2020, 11:38 »
Hey all,
I do not wish to get a de-cat,however was wondering if it is really neccesary to achieve a good sound? By that i mean a decently loud when pulling with good exhaust tone, dont want it to be crazy loud.
Would this be achievable still with:
1. Just a catback,stock dp.
2. CATTED downpipe and a catback exhaust.

Or would you say a de cat really is needed?

Also recommendations on good catbacks would be great.
Thanks so much!!

You can get a sports cat from somewhere like Scorpion or Milltek

I think it sounds nice standard, certainly sounds better from the outside compared to being sat inside the car.

As mentioned you can get sports cats if required but I'd certainly do it in stages. Go with a decent catback system and see how you feel with the sound. Even things like just replacing the backbox with the Clubsport S version makes a big difference. If after doing the main exhaust you still want better/more sound then go with a sports cat etc.

I stuck with a catback on mine as I wasn't planning on tuning it (which would normally be required to stop the CEL coming on) and I'm more than happy with how mine sounds. From what I've heard, the engine in the GTI is a particularly loud (exhaust wise) engine so it's probably not required to do it all unless you want to be properly antisocial.

I've got a Milltek non resonated system (basically a 3" 2 box system with the Y pipe at the rear) and it sounds "Beefy but not loud" which is exactly what I was after.
2014 Golf GTI (PP) in Pure White with
Vienna Leather, Keyless Entry, High Beam Assist, Park Assist, Rear View Camera. Milltek Exhaust, Eibach Sportlines, 19" BBS SR wheels - SOLD!!!!!

2018 Audi TTRS in Nardo Grey with
Black pack, 20" Alloys, Privacy glass and Sports Exhaust. No mods yet!

Thanks mate, will certainly do it in stages, may find I am happy with just the catback.

Only had my GTi a few weeks and not sure if the car is really quiet or it's just really quiet on the inside?

Best way AMD tbh I’m sure you’ll be happy with it too.

It is really quiet. I was so surprised when I first took one out for a test drive. Genuinely would have thought they’d have gone a little beefier stock.

Mk7's GTIs are quiet, apart from CS models. They have addressed this for the Mk7.5 Performance but still, it's a Golf so it's not too loud.
