USB port not working since new Halfords battery
« on: 30 November 2019, 17:57 »
Hi There,
Just had Halfords put in a new AGM battery to my mk7 gti. At first everything seemed fine until I put my iPhone on charge and then soon realised it wasn’t quiet right. It’s almost like it won’t accept the charging source now and it keeps disconnecting like a faulty wire would. I’ve obviously tried different cables which all work fine when used with other power supply’s plus I know it was fine before the battery change cos I charged my phone on the way to Halfords with no trouble at all.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated??

I wasn't there, but did they program the car with the serail number of the new battery?

Running a fault code reader may bring something up that has not been programmed?

Changing the battery should not have any effect on the USB port. But you could try a reboot of the whole system, just disconnect the negative terminal (10mm nut) for a few minutes and re-connect it. You will get the Christmas tree of doom on the dash when you re start the car but it is normal and will go away after a short drive.

Good place to start troubleshooting...you would be surprised at how many minor niggles that little exercise can rectify.

If the exact type & AH of battery was fitted as the original one..you should change the serial number by 1 digit using VCDS or ignore the xmas tree of doom & drive the car several miles & it will re learn..

However, if you have changed the type (from EFB to AGM) or AH then you need to tell the BCM (using VCDS) what type & AH it is otherwise it won't charge the battery etc properly...

its all the smart electronics & BCM units...makes a previously simple task more time consuming...
