91 gti 8v Annoying rear knocking noise

Can anyone help me cure a very annoying knocking noise coming from the rear end of my 91 8v gti golf.
I have had the car up on a set of ramps which allowed the wheels to hang freely and cannot see any fault with the suspension units, these dont look too old.
Is the problem likely to be the axle mounts, because looking at them they seem ok but how could i tell.
Is there any way of being able to find out.
The car still feels ok on the road.

Might be your exhaust hitting the under side of your car?

Checked this out and found the heat sheild to be loose so sorted this.

Problem lies with the rear drivers side suspension.  When you drive along you can feel the shocker move at the same time as the knocking noise appears, so I am wandering if there is some part missing off my suspension set up at the rear.

The car has been lowered do they sometimes remove other parts to make the car look even lower than the 35mm drop?

If so what part is it?

Is the spring seated correctly?

have you checked the rear axle bush? when i first got mine it had a knock on it, i thought it was a soft shock at first but found out it was rear axle bush

simple way to test, with the car stationary on the ground, try and move the wheel back and forth, if there is play in it then it'll be the bush

Look and see if the bushes are cracking up.

I herd the rear axle bushes a pain in the neck to replace?

Yep, need to remove the rear axle, the old bushes needed to be pressed out, and new ones pressed in. They are very tightly pushed in so you will probably need a hydraulic press.

I do really think it will be the bump stops, i had the samer problem it took half n hour to do both on the back.

The rubber in between the damper and the spring had roted away and this was causing the banging in the back.

change them and that will sort your problem.

The bump stops always seem to break on the backs, as along as they still on there they will usually work. Worth a look.
