MK7.5 PP DSG 1st To 2nd Gear
« on: 08 August 2019, 04:20 »
Something that’s has been bugging me for a while. I have a 7.5 GTi performance pack DSG. Using manual mode, when setting off and changing to 2nd it feels like the clutch isn’t engaging, it will slip until it reaches around 20mph then fully bite. It can also be noticed from the Rev counter. If I come if the accelerator pedal at around 15mph after changing to 2nd the revs will start to drop but not in relation to the speed of the car. If I set of in Drive or sport drive it seems fine. Mostly this happens when it’s a cold start but it has happened when fully warmed up. I can’t see this being a normal characteristic if it’s only happening in manual.

There is a behaviour that rev limits when the engine is stone cold. How this manifests itself on a DSG in manual I don't know, but I suspect that's what you are seeing...

Yes, even in manual, the dsg box isn’t fully manual. The box ECU controls things to prevent damage.

Hi Andy

I'm kind of glad someone else has mentioned this as my GTi Performance DSG also does the same as you've mentioned albeit in normal Drive mode aswell. Makes the change from 1st to 2nd quite lumpy! Mine seems to do it irrespective of it being cold or hot.

I did take mine into VW to query it, but they said everything was fine and no fault codes were reported. Strange really as a couple of friends have recently purchased Leon Cupras with 7spd DSG, and there gear changes appear to be silky smooth...

Noticed the same. Definitely slips the clutch as low speed. I notice it most when you pull out of a junction where you haven't quite stopped so it's still in 2nd and it seems to ride the clutch for a bit.

The other thing I've noticed if you are in M for any reason when cold it can thud a bit when going from 1st to 2nd. But doesn't do that in D.

So I’m not alone then!

I’ve had it happen with a fully warm engine, setting off relatively quick in manual mode and when selecting 2nd at around 4K revs, the revs didn’t drop but kind of held there while the car continued to accelerate then the revs climbed as normal when in fact the revs should have dropped to match the ratio of 2nd gear. No it was wasn’t wheel slipping either.

Yes, think I've had something similar with higher revs  :undecided:

Mine behaves exactly like this and in addition........

When in M and moving slowly in queuing traffic I like to stop unnecessary shifting of the dsg gearbox so try to plan the gears to suit traffic flow......if I hold in 1 for say 20 seconds on steady minimal throttle and then shift to 2nd it's quite a jerky change.........does it hot or cold......leave it in D and it's as smooth as usual.

With my transition to DSG with the Polo GTI+, I was surprised how much the DSG box slips the clutch to smooth out gear changes in D and S, as well as seemingly slipping 2nd a fair bit when you decelerate to a crawl in traffic, and then disengaging fully to stop (rarely using 1st in that situation) . Never noticed it on my Dad's string of DSGs
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Hi all, first ever post/reply.

Dragging this one up again, this seems like a really prominent issue on my March 2019 build GTI PP DSG (in Australia, same spec as UK). It’s now done 2250km (1500mi thereabouts).

Has anybody determined if the “slipping” from 1st to 2nd is a flaw? Not sure if I should be concerned about it or not. But doing mainly city travelling, short distance during the week (average 11mp/hr) I’m averaging 15mpg!

On the highway it drops to 45-47mpg, which makes me think this 1st to 2nd is causing super high fuel consumption around town.

Any thoughts/experience? Thanks all
