If you've only had the car a week, can't you take it back to where you bought it from? Or was it a private sale?

Was thinking the same.

Private sale sadly.

The links people have posted have been brilliant, looks like its a common issue and can be fixed for around £400.
I can even find brand new on line from car electric places for circa £2k so where are VW getting 5+k from?!

If you're going down the replacement unit route, be aware that Discover Nav and Discover Nav Pro are two different units. Fine if you're not bothered, but don't buy a Nav thinking it's a Nav Pro!

There are actually three later Pro ones !

MIB2 adds car play/android auto and VW CarNet - same physical form as your existing one.
MIB2.5 adds the much bigger Mk7.5 buttonless touch screen
MIB2.6 adds permanently VW connected  CarNet with a GSM modem (built in VW SIM). Mk7.5 from about November 2018 onwards.

2.5/2.6 is kinda my name for them, I don't know what VW actually call them.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and leaving it off for 10 minutes or so?

Might be worth a try before chucking a load of money at it?

Also I had a BMW and it started doing all kind of strange electrical glitches (including something with the stereo) and it needed a new battery-might be worth a shout on a car of this age?

These guys have a great reputation and also offer all types of repair or upgrade for much less money.

CLICKY
A great reputation for being massively expensive. Still cheaper than VW mind.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

Tell them to go and swivel. £5.5k is a ludicrous price. Not sure why they'd price themselves out like that, surely if other places are doing it for a few hundred quid, they should match that as it's better than nothing? What a strange practice.

The places doing it for a few hundred are likely to be used/reconditioned units. Or dare I say via 'unofficial' supply channels. I doubt your local dealer will offer to provide used parts. These units also need to be installed by someone that knows what they're doing to overcome the component protection, it's not a job for a novice.
