This sounds like it shouldn't even cost that, to be honest. It's a software bug, isn't it?

I reckon VW were quoting for just ripping out and replacing the whole lot, speakers and all, including labour.

Can't the unit be "un-updated"? Presumably at some point a bug has been introduced and you need to get it back to how it was like a return to as it was originally. I agree with sjw, this shouldn't be costing anything. I'd be concerned that replacing a part may not solve the problem.

Possibly not. If the code update function has a check that says "if the proposed version is greater than the current version then update..."

Quite a lot of things won't let you downgrade in that way - you have to effectively wipe the memory and flash from new.

We have factory equipment that is just like that and its a b1tch.

Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Bugger. Modern stuff might be flash and high tech but when it goes wrong it's a big pile of sh!t  Roll on the MK8 with a new selection of software issues...

So spoken to VW again and the cost is £5,208.64 plus vat plus fitting plus coding.
The part they will replace is JUST the main unit.
This is the drive that sits in your glove box.

Nothing else, no new screen, speakers, JUST THAT

As already said its almost HALF the price of the car. An insurance company would write the car off. Totally ludicrous.

Thats crazy. Those guys we linked above would give you new screen and box for about 600.... I am sure they can fix this for you!

I had a similar issue with my Mk7 2013 GTD. 6 weeks after the warranty had expired my media system just stopped functioning. The tech at my dealership did everything he could, but couldn’t get it working. VW themselves were incredibly unhelpful and I was quoted £3500 for a new head unit. Luckily for me, the dealership felt this was ridiculous and replaced it for me, I don’t know if they got anything back from VW, but they kept my custom. Whilst I’m no expert, I would have thought that the sale of goods act may assist. Is it reasonable to expect a £5000 media system to pack up after 5 years? I think not. Good luck with your endeavours.

If you've only had the car a week, can't you take it back to where you bought it from? Or was it a private sale?
