Darn it, oh well. Now the decision, take it in January or wait until March??

I may have posted before that in my opinion, I wouldn't wait a further 3 months to take delivery of a car that was built in October, that mean's it will have been waiting around stagnate doing nothing but rusting for 6 months. For me, it's not worth the few extra hundred £ that it will be worth come trade in just to be driving around with the latest plate for 6 months before its replaced by 69. Besides, my dealer has told me they will honour the trade in value of my current car which was based on October trade in values as it is VW's fault, I can imagine the few hundred pound i'd gain going to the new plate would be offset by the revised value of my current car in March 19.

As soon as it's ready I'm having it!

Good point well made

Also, once it’s delivered to the dealer, if it’s sitting there for three months at the dealer’s, there’s a risk of it getting scratched / dinged, or used as target practice by the local pigeons and our other feathered friends. The dealer might even put it in the showroom as a display model, when it’ll be at the mercy of Joe Public and their kids crawling all over it.

Unless the dealer has secure indoor storage facilities that can’t be accessed by customers I’d take delivery in January.

This was my quandary this time last year. My feelings were exactly as you stated even though I know my dealer has secure indoor storage. Now a year later sitting in the background watching this tread unfold I can’t help thinking I made the right decision to take delivery early January and don’t regret it one little bit. Why prolong the agony any longer than necessary when you have waited so long !!
Get it as soon as you can. Better in your garage than theirs

There is a cut off date which your dealer can call the car from port before Christmas  If I remember correctly from last year is sometime next week. After that it definitely won’t move from Grimsby to your dealer before January. If your boat gets a berth tonight it will be unloaded by morning. I would badger your dealer again to see if they can at least call it before Christmas. You never know??
Mine got called on the last day in December before the cut off and arrived at the pdi centre on the 28th Dec. Allowing for New Year holiday mine was pdi checked on the 3rd Jan and I picked up on 5th Jan
It should be a very Happy New Year (red tape permitting)

I am in a similar position albeit my car is built, but still in Germany.  I have driven Audi for the last 20 years and if i am being honest i would have preferred a S3 but told by Audi in July not to expect an S3 until April 2019 hence the change to the GTI.  I am really looking forward to the GTI but, the experience is being seriously hampered due to the poor communication by VWUK who are a total shambles based on my previous experiences with Audi.
