Cheers Watts.

Yeah I've started to realise that to be honest Mcmaddy, it's going on permanently once I've sorted the smell!

You'll be getting a musty smell if you don't use the climate control. Your creating a vicious circle by not using it and potentially extra expense to fix it so why not use it all the time?

I'm more of a windows down kind of guy too Watts but I put mine on yesterday and there was a terrible musty smell. I've been looking at sprays to get rid of the mildew and smell (diagnosed through a few web
searches). Anyone have any recommendations or ones to avoid please?

I don't disagree with this as good advice but I do like the windows open. Nothing better than the good clean air around Heathrow airport....

I do occasionally open the windows especially in this weather but I don't leave the climate control off for weeks or months, it's usually always on.

Climate control is never turned off and I still have my windows open. Modern compressors cost next to nothing and not worth worrying about.

Mine is poor. It went in for a re-gas last month and stopped wheezing on start up for a day..

Now it’s back. It never gets “cold” imo

Should be ice cold! Both my Mk7.5 have been chilly. Even in this weather.

Jim: Hi - I'm not sure if you are aware, but the previous version mk7.0 (not sure about the mk7.5) had two separate compressor settings for the AC: "normal" and "hot country". I've no idea how VW decides how to set the options, but down here in Australia, it's set to "hot country" from the factory and my mk7.0 gets icy cold, very quickly -even in our peak summer period.

I've been involved in a couple of USA forums where lots of NAR models (North American Region) are factory set to "normal". I suspect that in America, their local emission rules have an influence on the setting that is factory-set and this might also be the case in your EU  country. This notwithstanding, intuitively I would say that UK isn't considered a "hot country", so I suspect that the factory settings are "normal" in your part of the world

That's the bad news - the good news is that it's a relatively easy process to change the setting on the  AC HV control module (@ address hex08) but you need access to a diagnostic cable. The process is a bit different depending on the diagnostic cable - google it to find out how

here's a couple of screenshots demonstrating the process:

Yes in the UK is is on the normal setting, changing it to Hot Country makes a hell of a difference and cold air is coming out the vents in 15seconds. Well worth taking the time changing IMO.

Just out of interest but mainly because radio is crap and I was bored, I thought I would test this out. I had noticed a drop in economy whilst using the ac but wasn't sure by how much. So, on my commute this morning at 21c, windows open (arm most definitely NOT out of the window nor any wrongly placed millinery) driving as I would normally, 34.5mpg. My commute is 5.3 miles and around 15 minutes. The return journey, 8 hours later and at 31c, same route (but obviously in reverse), driving conditions and driving style with the ac set to auto, strong and 20c, 31.6mpg. A difference of 2.9 or around 8.3% which is nearly a gallon per tankful. I suspect the gap between the figures would narrow on longer journeys though.

So, when it's hot I'll have the climate on but when I want to, I'll swich it off and open the windows and if I had enough, enjoy the wind in my hair

Driving in reverse all the way back will give you lower mpg as it’s only one gear 🤪
