OBD11 Torque Restriction question
« on: 04 June 2018, 10:57 »
SO there is coding to deactivate the torque restriction on the car

Has anyone done this (non track drivers) and can tell me the purpose of it ? perhaps i am being naive but would removing this or putting it from Strong to Normal going to affect the lag you get in 1st and 2nd - i have a pedalbox on anyway, but when the pedalbox is off (service etc) the car in 1/2nd is always very short and i wondered if this is why ?

First and second being short is more gearing than anything else on the GTD.

I know you asked about this when you first got your GTD...

The Mini that you came from has a very different gear ratio to a Golf.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro

Jen,

The gears in the car (1st and 2nd you mention) are what they are. That combined with the final drive ratio gives your gearing (mph/1000 revs). That doesn't change one bit with a pedal box. All the pedal box is doing is translating the movement of your foot on the accelerator differently to stock. It doesn't change the gearing at all.

On a diesel, due to the fact that they run very high compression ratios (amongst other reasons), most of the time they red line at between 4.5-5.5k revs. A petrol can go as high as 8k revs as it runs lower compression rates (and many other factors related to diesel vs petrol fuels). It's one of the reasons why my last 3 diesel VW's (one Scirocco and 2 MK7 GTD's) all had DSG boxes rather than manual. Because you run out of revs so quickly in 1st and 2nd gear, and when trying to make a quick getaway, rather than snatching for the next gear so quickly as the rev counter enters the red zone, the DSG just takes care of it, and allows you to make rapid progress without really noticing the limited rev range on the diesel engines.

Perfectly put

I don’t know but deactivating the torque restriction would surely lead to massive wheelspin in low gears or just make the traction control work twice as hard for the same progress as normal?

Does the GTD have torque restrictions in the bottom two gears?
Mine always felt like it did but I passed it off as the low mileage and whatever VW do to the ECU to make the cars feel a bit sluggish when new.

The bottom two gears do feel way too low.
I felt the same with the R.

I’ve driven a few commercial vehicles with torque restrictors in the lower gears.
It’s a shame the GTD does feel hampered in the bottom gears as I’ve driven a few T5’s with broadly similar engines and they flew off the line when unloaded.

Sooner you than me! Check the tools you need... For £450 a dealer will supply and fit...

Have you got the magic programming dongle to set it up for a Golf?
