Interesting that one comment mentions a price cut for the PP.  I’ll believe that one when I see it

Only other place I’ve seen mention of the PP becoming standard is in some Australian articles searching for MY2019 on google.

I don't know why I didn't consider the 'Gulf' between the two GTIs as being a potential reason before... that actually makes a whole lot of sense! I asked a chap in the dealership why anybody should choose the Golf over the Polo GTI when the equipment and power are so close, yet the price is so far apart. He had no answer!

'Cos inside it looks like a Seat, that's why.

I did consider the Polo GTI but I’ve gone off the looks.  It just looks a bit fat.  And not keen on that weird extra bit of coloured trim above the front grill.  The seat Ibiza just looks so much more sharp than the Polo.

Plus I don’t personally think the Polo spec is that close to the Golf.

Agreed. Even the top spec Polo GTI+ doesn't get sat nav, climate control or the Winter Pack. That's  £1,350. Then there's the things you can't spec on the Polo like the Golf's multi-link rear suspension and dynamic rear indicators.

Currently Drive The Deal are offering £2,650 off the Polo GTI+, but £5,429 off a 5 door Golf GTi PP DSG. So the £9k starting difference is actually more like £6k if you haggle hard. About 30% more cash for just over 20% more power. But that also includes on the Golf the fancy diff and the uprated brakes. You could also argue the Golf is better finished off inside despite being essentially a 6 year old product.

The next Golf GTi is due in a couple of years time, that's probably going to increase the gap to the Polo in terms of size, tech, power and......price!

In fairness I did actually sit in a new Polo before I ordered it (I originally ordered a Polo GTI+, but the 12month wait put me off somewhat), and found the cabin quality plenty good enough! I'm driving an A-Class at the moment, and I'd rate the cabin quality as 'okay', though not excellent - and especially not for the money.

I've not actually sat in a Golf since the MK IV - so my delivery on Tuesday (yay!) is especially exciting!

VW confirmed it was not available to order when I ordered one.

Hi Col, this was initially announced on the 18th of May; some Retailers may still have been able to fulfil orders made after that point if they had already ordered in stock vehicles as well as orders assigned to individual customers.

Another day down and no closer to my GTI.

Dealer reckons no manual GTIs available in black or grey, and my only option is to go for the PP.

Until I pressed him on where he checked.  Only Jardine Motors stock, not UK wide.  So he’s back on the hunt with other dealers stock.

They were also trying to rush me on the date, as the £1500 VWFS deposit contribution ends today, and they suggested it was dropping to £750 tomorrow.

Will see what happens.  Decision to go ahead or not tomorrow I think.

You could always look at nearly new, plenty of choice on Autotrader and enjoy a massive saving at the same time.
