When it cuts out, check for a spark.

If you've got a non-standard fuel filler cap, it may be causing your problem. If the tank's getting pressurised it'll stop the fuel flowing - try an original cap.

I had an old Morris Minor - took me ages to suss what was happening and it was due to a non-vented after market filler cap.

To check for spark....

1* Get a spark plug and connect it to a lead in your engine

2* Step back and hold the rubber end of the lead.

3* Keep the spark plug a few mm away from the head.

4* Get someone to start the engine and see if there is a spark.

5* Do this trick with the rest of the leads but be very carful.

The spark should jump from the spark plug to the metal work on the engine.

If there is no spark check your distrubutor, leads and change you spark plugs.

I have encountered something simular on various cars.
Each time I have come across it, it has been the fuel pump relay. Has this been changed?

See if you can hear the fuel pump when it cuts out.

On some MK1's there is a fuel filter inside the tank. This gets clogged with sh!t and makes the car run ruff if at all. It will then occasionally start fine straight after. The best way to get round this is to take off the fuel line at the engine end and blow down the line with a small compressor (oh take the fuel cap off first...).

If the filter is clogged you should here the pressure build up followed by a release of pressure and bubbles in the petrol. What you have just done is "remove" the filter. It will float around inside your tank but shouldn't cause you anymore probs.  Make sure you have an inline filter on your fuel line and you should have lots of happy motoring ahead!

Hope this helps!

If the fuel tank is pressurised then check the breather hoses as they are probably blocked.
