I enquired about one of these, I was surprised they had UK clocks.

Once my assumption that the car was an import my interest faded.

Cars like this struggle with resale, you should declare to the insurance company it is an imported car, despite them all coming from Germany. Is the security exactly as specified by UK insurers?

I would steer clear of one now unless it was really cheap, but happily buy one after maybe 7-10 years when you will be buying it on condition and at a lower value.

Good point re security... the factory alarm is not standard in Irish GTI's.

But the MPH clocks still have me convinced that these are actually UK spec cars that made their way to the UK (eventually) via Ireland (or someplace else).

If you look at the VIn number and in the service schedule booklet.

Under the "Equipment" section mine has;

BON: Component parts set complying with vehicle type for Great Britain.

I assume it says something different here for non UK spec cars?

If there is so much confidence these cars are UK spec, why is there only a 2 year warranty? I appreciate the dealer carries the 3rd year on from the 2 VW underwrite.

New VW's being sold by a Honda dealer as well, seems odd to me?

Even though they are under £30k, it is still a lot of money for me to spend on something that has fallen down in my pre purchase due diligence!

"Denton Cars - With over 30 years of personal experience Frank Greenway has built outstanding customer loyalty and strong reputation through his exceptional knowledge, impartial advice and commitment to customer service. Starting with Austin Rover franchise for the Skipton area, the business quickly grew and the Volkswagen franchise was added in 1993. In 2014 the Volkswagen business was sold. Now joined by his sons, the business will specialise in quality used vehicles."

Just someone who knows how well Golfs sell and is chancing their arm having got some stock from some sort of Auction I'd guess.

Good luck to them, I have no experience of the dealership and certainly nothing negative to say.

As mentioned I felt it was too much to spend without everything lining up as I would expect on a delivery mileage car.

It is interesting, there are still quite a few CS around, with delivery mileage CS-S no doubt being offered on a sale/return basis by dealers, I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of a correction or alignment of prices in 2018?

The 2 seats doesn’t really bother me I swapped a lotus for the CSS
I have a daily driver as does my wife and the thought of putting the kids in my ‘good’ car every day doesn’t appeal!

The problem I have with the CSS is ones with over 1000 miles on aren’t selling and are massively cheaper than low miles ones

It’s a case of don’t use it in fear of losing on it or use it and lose out a lot.

I test drove the ed40 when it first came out and liked it. I think the biggest difference between the 2 are the cup2 tyres obviously and the suspension set up.

I think it’s prob 85% what the CSS is. The suspension on the S is superb

Basically the ed40 is near enough the same but I would be happy to use it and leave it on the driveway and put the kids in when needed

I see. Personally, putting money on a car as an investment never made sense to me, probably because for that amount of money I'd choose more traditional investment options. But I think there is some contradiction here or you're not really sure what you're after. If you insist on seeing the CSS as an investment (a view that I don't share) then I guess you have to keep it in the garage hoping its price goes up and be happy with that and buy something else for your fun, but not sell it. Most investments need time and patience after all. If you enjoy the car as you say you do then just go ahead and enjoy it and again not sell it. Selling is an option only assuming that you don't want to worry about how its value will evolve and want to get rid while losing little money (or none depending on your achieved sale price).

I think it's also too soon to realize which factors affect resale value and by how much. With just a year after production cease naturally low mile examples will be selling for more, but you don't know whether in 5 years time they will be still selling for that much more than average miles CSS's or even worse low/average miles CS's. It's a gamble.

You're right, in my previous post I forgot the tires which are a big aspect as well. So basically, PSC2 and hub carriers and CSS camber settings and I think if you were in a manual 3-door CS you wouldn't be able to tell the difference for 99% of the time.

However, I think the best choice at the moment would be hands down a PS4S for basically anything out there that is not track-exclusive. Practically all the performance of a PSC2 with all the usability and high (as in better) wear index of a PSS. Phenomenal performance on the wet also. I just keep reading so many amazing things about that rubber and how it introduces all the latest innovations from Michelin that I'll probably switch to 19" alloys just to be able to run it.

I didn’t buy my car as an investment but did buy it in the hope that after having some fun in it for 2 Years it wouldn’t depreciate badly.

It seems ones with miles on have depreciated quite a bit where the normal edition. 40 seem fairly level

these appear to have UK clocks

there are maybe 6 of these for sale in various garages. all the same spec

all seem to have DCC, nav pro, pan roof, bucket and dynaudio and winter pack

i have a buyer for my clubsport s and would consider changing to a clubsport 40 but not are if these would be harder to insure and sell on in the future.

i wonder if VW would allocate it with a number too?

will miss the CSS as it is a special car and superb to drive but would maybe get more use of out of a more regular car.

I must be missing something but what makes you so certain these (or other similar) come from Ireland? There's nothing obvious I can see in the specs or photos that suggest they are anything out of the ordinary. Have they not just been held back from the market by VW to ensure unregistered examples didn't flood the market over the summer (assumably to help stabilise prices for VW dealers)?

But it might've been Northern Ireland as Republic of Ireland cars would have KPH clocks. Lets face it, you can't rely on the accuracy of car salesmen on the subject of cars, I suspect their knowledge of geography may also be suspect....
