Import Clubsport
« on: 19 December 2017, 19:31 »
seen a few delivery miles clubsport's for sale, all the same spec with pretty much every option except pretorias

they seem to have come room ireland

they seem pretty good value - has anyone bought one?

they only have a 2yr warranty - can this be extended to 3year uk warranty?

can you apply for a number plaque from VW UK? will it be worth less come sale time and will it be classed as an import?

Funny, there's a few Clubsports for sale here in Ireland and they're clearly UK cars, or originally intended for the UK market. You can tell from the clocks (MPH).

Have you a link to any of the cars you mean? If they're Irish (or were intended for the Irish market) then they'd have KPH-only clocks. Generally speaking standard Irish spec is a little better than you guys get though, e.g. Nav would be pretty much standard in all of them.

This one for example, for sale over here looks like it was a UK car: https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/volkswagen/golf/used-2017-171-volkswagen-golf-gti-clu-wexford-fpa-3941971943822025370

I'll have to ask my sister but from what I understand she either didn't pay for Prets or they were included in the deal.

I know Irish cars didn't have a number though, but then either did UK car until they got here.

Prets were an option here, bundled with those semi slick tyres and DCC if I recall correctly, making it a horrendously expensive (~ 4K) option to spec here.

these appear to have UK clocks

there are maybe 6 of these for sale in various garages. all the same spec

all seem to have DCC, nav pro, pan roof, bucket and dynaudio and winter pack

i have a buyer for my clubsport s and would consider changing to a clubsport 40 but not are if these would be harder to insure and sell on in the future.

i wonder if VW would allocate it with a number too?

will miss the CSS as it is a special car and superb to drive but would maybe get more use of out of a more regular car.

They are certainly a very nice spec, which is good.  You would have to check with VW Customer Service, but I very much doubt whether you'll get a plaque.  Also, an extended VW warranty might be a problem, but if it is,  there are other warranty providers.  You'll definitely have to declare to your insurance that it is an import, but I don't know if that'll affect your premium?  Also, resale may be a bit of an issue, it's unlikely they will have the value of a UK car?  From a personal point of view, I wouldn't buy one, I would buy a proper late registered UK car, but I can see how the spec and prices of the imports are tempting.

I don’t really see why it would impact the resale much - if at all? Minor Warranty concerns aside maybe.
It has a great spec, on par or better than standard U.K.? It has UK clocks, which is odd - not sure how that happened if it wasn’t originally a uk destined car...
So overall, come resale, most people wouldn’t know or care... they all come from the same factory at the end of the day.

If I may ask, what are the main reasons of it not being used? Is it its limited practicality due to two less seats and doors or a change in circumstances?

Regarding the "atmosphere" and the looks inside and out I think you'd like a CS40 very much since visually and aesthetically everything is exactly the same: the alcantara trims and steering wheel, the Recaro buckets, all the sporty details here and there. Finding a manual over a DSG might be harder but I'm a DSG guy so I won't write that down as a negative

Driving wise I think for 90% of the time or more you'd be hard pressed to tell a difference, especially if you plan to use it more for daily driving as you say you'd like to do. The CS is already a tighter and more agile (and more powerful) car than the GTI and it feels so. For that last tenth where the CSS would drive better there are easy ways to address the issue if getting the exact same feeling is a top priority and that's obviously swapping the appropriate items with CSS ones. I believe hub carriers with their extra camber are the most critical suspension part to get to the CSS feeling, the aluminium front sub frame is not a bad choice either. There are lists with the bespoke CSS items at various forums so you could take it from there if those upgrades are still not enough. Good thing is the parts are a straight fit and as OEM as it gets.

I test drove one of these cars a few weeks ago. Amazingly I went to a dealer who originally had 25 of these cars in. He had 6 left when I went.
Current: Clubsport45, white, DCC.

Past: Mk5 gti blue graphite, mk6 gti carbon grey, mk6 gti edition 35 candy white, Mk7 pp gti tornado red, 2016 Audi S3 sportback, 2019 7.5 Golf R.

The 2 seats doesn’t really bother me I swapped a lotus for the CSS
I have a daily driver as does my wife and the thought of putting the kids in my ‘good’ car every day doesn’t appeal!

The problem I have with the CSS is ones with over 1000 miles on aren’t selling and are massively cheaper than low miles ones

It’s a case of don’t use it in fear of losing on it or use it and lose out a lot.

I test drove the ed40 when it first came out and liked it. I think the biggest difference between the 2 are the cup2 tyres obviously and the suspension set up.

I think it’s prob 85% what the CSS is. The suspension on the S is superb

Basically the ed40 is near enough the same but I would be happy to use it and leave it on the driveway and put the kids in when needed
