No kick down in manual mode in my 7.5 just been out to try it
Try again - if you push past the point of resistance on the throttle pedal it will kickdown. As I said above, it takes a concerted effort to do, so anyone whose car is changing down in manual every time they 'floor it' needs to remove the lead weight from their boots.

Ive used kickdown in auto mode before and know how far down you need to push but in manual sport mode it wont kickdown i cant push the throttle pedal any harder lol

Edit -im gonna go out to try again (any excuse to drive the gti)

I've just tried in my 7.5 and can indeed confirm that it kicks down in manual but you have to really mash the pedal as eatontrifles says, much more than to get it to kickdown in auto... you must have heavy feet Magnus!!

Presumably you have to push the pedal past the "gate" (you feel it click past it)? (I don't have DSG)

That's the same gate used for over riding the speed limiter and not something I find myself going near very often!

I don't think you can override the speed limiter otherwise there would be potential problems.

It there not a little knob type thing behind the accelerator that you can turn to take the resistance from the kickdown point? My last auto car was an Audi and it had one.

Try it!

I did.... set it to 70 and it won't go over it... unless you kick down past the notched gate it goes BONG! but off you go.

There are safety reasons why you'd want to override it like this.

This is my major gripe on the DSG box, proper pain on track and also sometimes you end up changing up two gears, DCT box does not do this on the BMW so you have more control
