STOP/START
« on: 11 June 2017, 17:51 »
I seem to remember a post on here saying you can get the stop/start permanently disabled via VAGCOM - is this
straightforward, has anybody had it done - can you just ask the dealer to do this or would you need to go to an independant garage or VW tuner with VAGCOM ?

Yes it can be disabled with VCDS and OBDeleven.  You change the voltage setting

Here's the coding for obdeleven, I expect it's the same for vcds.

Disable stop/start

1) Select Control unit 19
2) Select Adaptation
3) Select Stop Start limit voltage
4) Change value to 12 (default is 7.6)
5) Press the green tick to confirm

OK,thanks Booth11 - I am looking at ordering a Mk 7.5 Gti later this year - do you think the dealer is likely to be
helpful with this or would I get the "we don't do that sort of thing sir,it's there for good reason" sort of response ? -
there is a good independant VW specialist quite near to me - I presume they would have VCDS ?

I honestly don't know, some dealers are more accommodating than others.  Some have had dealers disable their soundaktor as (for a charge), but whether they'd disable stop start I don't know.  Far better if you can find someone local to you with vids or obdeleven who'll do it for you for a beer.  Worth asking on here to see if there's anyone in your area.

Hi, just curious, can I ask why you want it disabled?

I'm one of those people who nearly always slip the car into neutral and let the clutch up even for short periods at
junctions/lights etc in order to maximise the life of the clutch release bearing to avoid that noise you get in neutral later on when the release bearing is worn which disappears when the clutch is pressed - also I don't like having an engine switched off at the wrong moment - i.e.if you are waiting to turn right across oncoming traffic or you want to pull out sharply into moving traffic - I know they start up again very quickly and you can disable it every time you start the car but I still think it's unnecessary as the amount of fuel saved is minimal compared to the extra wear on starter motor/battery life and engine wear - just google stop/start systems - it's another one of those things invented by the manufacturers to help the official fuel cycle figures - an engine on idle hardly uses any fuel.
The only exception perhaps is people who do a lot of city driving (which I don't) especially London etc - but they
are more likely to have DSG anyway so the clutch release bearing isn't an issue.

You'd get away far quicker from that junction if you hold it in gear rather than keep going for neutral...

Just saying ;-)

The usual reason for people moaning about S/S is with DSG actually...

MEZZA:  There are basically 2 x tweaks for disabling STOP/START (SS) and both are fairly mature now -so both have been implemented by many mk7 owners.

These tweaks trick the decision making process into thinking that parts of the engine/electrics can't sustain switching off the ignition: The "voltage method" (above) fools the car into thinking that there is insufficient battery capacity to turn-over the engine once the "START" command is given and the "Temperature " method makes the module believe that the engine is too hot to switch-off. Both these methods work, but they result in the SS tweak tell - which is the letter "A" embedded in a circle with a slash that appears on the MFD whenever the car comes to a rest.

There are other ways that avoid the "tell" - one of which is to pay kufatec an obscene amount of money for a device that plugs into the OBD socket.

But IMO, a far better way to disable SS (without the "tell") is to build and install an automatic SS kill-switch. I've been using one of these for a long time now and it has worked flawlessly - every time that I turn-on the ignition, 5 seconds later my Auto SS kill switch disables SS and I can re-engage SS any time in the journey if I so desire (not that I have ever done something as insane as this, because IMO, SS is the most dangerous facility in the car - especially if you have a RHD car and you are completing a RH turn against oncoming traffic).

My Automatic SS Kill Switch is easy to build, it is far cheaper than the kufatec device and it ain't difficult to install! Anyone with basic soldering skills and rudimentary DIY experience (like me) can do it!

Full details HERE

Don

PS: The other way to disable SS is like THIS - I've not tried this method, so as kickdown says "try this at your own risk"
