New Car New Dreamszzz of Modz
« on: 08 June 2017, 21:58 »
So after my 4 years with a GTD I'm now moving over to the facelift GTI! One thing I've always wanted to do in life is personally mod a GTI to my own taste! I plan on keeping the car for around 8 years so my question is this.

How much can I get away with modifying whilst the car is under warranty.

So far my plans are (warranty prevailing)

Engine stuff

Stage 1 map
Vw racing springs
Air filter upgrade

Cosmetic

Window tint
Wing mirror caps
Black vw front badge
Wheels spacers
Rear mudflaps

How much of this can I get away with without the dealer getting knickers in a twist! I don't want to void warranty or cause myself unnecessary costs!

Any advice on some or all these Modz appreciated.

Ben

Window tints? Why didn't you just spec 90% on the options? Much better than any film that can be added.

Remap will certainly be anti-warranty. Some people have got away with it, but ultimately it's a no no.

Black VW badge - the facelift has got a sensor in the badge now, so I'd be really wary of doing anything with it.

Your dreamszzzzz shouldn't be too difficult to decide upon.

Stage 1 probably best left off for a while until you're sure the engine and gearbox are healthy specimens. Personally I'd go for a pedal box whilst running in, then a tuning box for 95% of the gains of a remap and can easily be removed prior to dealer visits. A remap plus other bolt ons can then be added towards the end of the warranty.
Air filter upgrade? Not something I'd bother with unless going stage 2. A clean paper filter will suffice at stage 1.

Springs? They'll sharpen the looks. I've had too many uncomfortable experiences with too many different suspension kits to want to ever consider doing it again myself but VWR springs seem to be popular and well recommended.

Spacers, yep, they make a huge improvement to the looks but check with your insurer first. Some don't like spacers.

Mudflaps? No comment but they have their uses I guess.

Wing mirror caps are an easy mod.

Prior to the warranty running out I'd done...

Eibach Sportline Springs
Milltek Cat back
19" BBS SR wheels
Panel filter (I did have a Revo induction kit on but removed it as I didn't like the 2 fast 2 furious soundtrack)
DTUK Tuning box (although removed whenever it went into the dealers)
Carbon fibre mirror caps
Dogbone insert
Boost gauge mounted in the vent.

No questions asked by the dealers - how much of that is luck/mod friendly dealer I don't know though.

On the flip side, had I complained of a faulty shock absorber, I doubt it would have been covered as I'd changed springs - they will normally remove the warranty on anything directly related to the modifications and it's normally a bit of a grey area with dealers.
2014 Golf GTI (PP) in Pure White with
Vienna Leather, Keyless Entry, High Beam Assist, Park Assist, Rear View Camera. Milltek Exhaust, Eibach Sportlines, 19" BBS SR wheels - SOLD!!!!!

2018 Audi TTRS in Nardo Grey with
Black pack, 20" Alloys, Privacy glass and Sports Exhaust. No mods yet!

I have to wonder why anyone would want to take a brand new 30k car and make it look like a Halfords special, but each to their own...

If I was going to mod something, I'd probably stick to something less visual, maybe spend the money on a pedal box and a Stage 1 remap? At least you are getting something useful?

Maybe then put some lighter wheels and decent tyres on it? Perhaps follow that up with a brake kit?

That little lot is a pile of cash, but its at least useful?
