Its ok for sat nav within the limitations I've described.

You don't use it much on the main screen anyway, with either nav system you get a display between the clocks in front of you which is more useful (I find) that the map thingy anyway.

MIB2 was from around end of 2015/beginning of 2016.

They also at that time created a bundle called "tech pack" which was a very cheap bundle of NavPro MIb2 and DynAudio (never given a variant number, but possibly a Mk2 of that too) for about the cost of the NavPro alone. Therefore there are lots of Mk7's with NavPro and Dynaudio from this period. It was a steal!
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Offline I wanted a GTi

You're not wrong about it being a steel, for just over £1200 you got nav pro, dynaudio, app connect and voice activation didn't you.

Nav pro always had voice activation. The original poster has already stated that a newer year car is probably out of his price range so with this is mind what I'm saying is an mib1 nav pro isn't that much behind an mib2 version. All you get extra is app connect which to be honest on mine I've never used.

Well, just got back from having a look at a 2014 White R. It was so busy at the dealership in Northampton that I kinda gave up otherwise I would been there forever. It was this one http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/dealer/Golf-GTI/GTD/R/GTE/2.0-TSI-R-300-PS/Northampton/3853633-606186679-47073.aspx?srcmdc=se_ce_re_ - I think the base spec for the R.

Certainly did like the look of it and looks great in white. Saying that I also love the look of the GTI so when I have a bit more time I'll find somewhere that has both in stock - preferably a dealer near country roads so I can give it a real world test - and see which I prefer.

What I did notice is the difference in the cabin from my 2007 Type R. It seems a lot roomier - not sure in a good way or not. I like the way I'm cocooned in my Type R but I'm sure that's just something that I'd get used to as I've had my Civic for 5 years now.

The discs look like they have had a hard life on that white R.

I would try to get them replaced of you are interested in the car to avoid expense not too far down the road.

Yeah that's what I thought. TBH, I'm not looking at buying this car. Just wanted to have a look at an R close up as I'd only really considered the GTI as I thought the R might be too expensive. I'll do a bit more looking around on this forum and ask (bore to death) other owners ;-) need to decide whether, for the money, I'd be better getting the GTI or R.

I can confirm you will not find the cabin space too roomy compared to a Type-R.  I had 4x Type-R's prior to buying a GTI PP (2013) I felt like the cabin space was perfect and could not fault the car compared to my Type-R's.  I am now driving a Golf R so you can see I now like my Golfs.

There's always plenty of helpful people on here prepared to share experiences, thoughts and opinions, good and bad. You certainly won't bore anyone to death! Also worth looking back a page or two as there has already been an R vs GTI thread recently and many of your questions may have already been covered.

Greencode, when you question whether a GTi or an R is better for your money?

I think that is down to you, coming from a Type R you may like the Fwd PP with the Vaq electronic diff, or feel like a change for a 4wd.

I have owned and driven fast compact 4wd cars and for me it all becomes a bit one dimensional. I also prefer the aesthetics of the GTi.
Personally I am not about to move to an R.

Others will have the opposite view which is good, the point being buy what you prefer rather than what you perceive as better for your money.
