DIY Oil Change

Sorry guys might be a bit of a stupid question! I am looking at changing the oil myself (being cheap i know) I've been told that its fairly easy to do as long as you change the sump nut.

However i am unsure which oil i should be using, Castrol Edge 5W30 LL or Castrol Edge 5W40?

I was hoping some one could explain and point me in the right direction?

Also how much oil do i need? (I dont want to do the oil change and realise i dont have enough!)

Owned the GTI for 6 months now got to say one best cars i've owned!

Ring a motor factors and give them your reg and theyll give you all you need. They may ask if you want longlife poil or bot but that depends on if you want that or not

I did a "run-in" DIY oil change on my R - it was a complete doddle. If I remember rightly, the car took 5.6L of oil to the top of the checked markings of the dipstick, the oil filter was about £13 and the new plastic sump nut/plug was about £2.30. There are little green paint marks applied to the filter housing and housing base that line up to know you haven't overtightened it. Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0W40 or 5W40.

If your car is under warranty I would not recommend a DIY oil change in lieu of a proper service you'll be required to have proof of to maintain your warranty.

Either oil is fine as long as it meets the VW 504/507 spec. You need roughly 5.7 litres. Although I purchased a sump plug I ended up reusing the old one as it showed no damage. Oil filter uses a 32mm socket and should be torqued to 25nm (but +5nm is fine).

QFT - though I'd recommend changing the sump plug in all instances as it's plastic.

Wheres the best place to buy a genuine filters and sump plug apart from the dealers?

We have place called TPS in manchester, not sure if any one knows of any others.

Not wanting to start a debate. But when I changed my GTI's oil for the first time I did find bits of metal in it from 'running in'. I don't believe these would get sucked out using an extractor.
