£500?
I'd say they're very slightly taking the Mickey there. They're the same size as the standard wheels aren't they? Why do they need to charge an extra £500?
That's the power of marketing, making you think you need them!
You could say the same for paint colour choice; why do VW charge extra for any colour other than Black Rubin on the mk7.5 Golf? Compared to Black Rubin, does it cost an extra £280 to paint a Golf Pure White or Tornado Red, an extra £570 for a metallic colour (or £630 for an R in Lapiz Blue) or £990 more to paint it Oryx White? Almost certainly no, it doesn't. Easy money for VW.
Oryx white does cost extra to paint and if you're getting it repaired then about twice as much.
£500 for those wheels do seem like taking the piss though, surely a diamond cut finish is more expensive to do than just painting it and put a little red bit around the edge. It would be cheaper to get the standard diamond cut and get a refurbers to paint them(I wouldn't pick black)
£500 is quite a lot of extra money for them but I'd not say they were cheaper to produce than diamond cut.
Diamond cut wheels are painted, run on a lathe to polish the front facing flat surfaces and then lacquered.
Fairly labour intensive compared to standard powder coat.
But the two tone wheels are coated and then must be masked somehow (unless they use a transfer then lacquer over the top) before being part painted again which is probably more time consuming than a diamond cut.
In fact I'll see if I can find out how they achieve the finish in mass production.
