500? Thats pretty reasonable really.

I wonder how much they project sideways though - ie curb risk...

Not enough! They definitely need 15mm spacers on the arse end.

£500?

I'd say they're very slightly taking the Mickey there. They're the same size as the standard wheels aren't they? Why do they need to charge an extra £500?

That's the power of marketing, making you think you need them!

You could say the same for paint colour choice; why do VW charge extra for any colour other than Black Rubin on the mk7.5 Golf? Compared to Black Rubin, does it cost an extra £280 to paint a Golf Pure White or Tornado Red, an extra £570 for a metallic colour (or £630 for an R in Lapiz Blue) or £990 more to paint it Oryx White? Almost certainly no, it doesn't. Easy money for VW.

At least they won't/shouldn't suffer whiteworm.

By asking for an extra £500 they've managed to convince me that I definitely don't need them.

I take your point on the paint, but metallic paint has always cost extra over solid paint. Nothing new there, and it's not just VW that do that. At least there is the perception that you're getting something extra for the money. It's the charging extra for a different colour solid paint that grates.

Agree, metallic has always cost more than solid, and it's normal for most manufacturers to charge extra, but should it cost more these days? Solid colours didn't used to have a clear coat, but have done for some time now. So whether painted a solid or a metallic colour, a car will get primer, a colour base coat and clear coat - so the same painting process for metallic and non-metallic colours (Oryx White is the exception as there's an extra stage in the process; gets primer, Pure White base colour, a pearlescent coat and clear coat).

A high proportion of buyers will pay the extra though, as colour choice is a very personal thing.

£500 seems a small price to pay to get some decent looking wheels on your new car when you look at the alternatives.

Subjective though isn't it?

If you buy a GTD you get those wheels for free (albeit with a diamond cut finish). I'm in the few that doesn't mind the Parker wheels.

Oryx white does cost extra to paint and if you're getting it repaired then about twice as much.

£500 for those wheels do seem like taking the piss though, surely a diamond cut finish is more expensive to do than just painting it and put a little red bit around the edge. It would be cheaper to get the standard diamond cut and get a refurbers to paint them(I wouldn't pick black)
