I've got one of these http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2016/11/2/dashcam-review-viofo-a119-simple-capable-capacitor-camera.html

Works brilliantly and is really small.

If I decide to just go for the basic functionality of decent quality images this could tempt me as not too much of a risk at circa £80 and reviews and quality are all pretty positive.

Do you just use the USB as power?

No I have a power supply that I've hard wired in. There is no cables visible apart from the very end which connects to the camera base.

As the others have said...no auto dimming on mine either.
My MK5, Mk6 and (soon) Mk7 all have dimming mirrors. So I doubt if that mirror/dash cam would be a good choice. Though fine if you have a Mk4 I guess.

That Viofo A119 looks interesting for the money.

I'm thinking of getting a DDPia M6 after looking a Techmoans video http://www.techmoan.com/blog/category/car-dvr-dashcams
It's the video under the link above.

Is anyone using a Nextbase 512g?? I can get one brand new for £130 which I think is a decent price, just slightly worried about the size of it and where to place it as I don't think it would fit behind the rear view mirror dude to the auto light sensors and high beam assist sensors

I have one in my TT.  I have it suckered just behind the rear view mirror to the left, so I can see the screen but not too much of the sucker, and after a day or two you don't even notice it.  It also has the anti-glare tech in that one so its crystal clear which is one of the reasons I bought it as there's no glare from the sun/oncoming traffic.  It's not as big as you think, even with it attached to the sucker it's pretty discreet.

I don't have it hard wired however as I read that it can't be done that way on this particular model (could be b0llocks, but as it's my first dashcam I wanted to try it first before I hard wired, so that suited me) so I have it powered by the fag lighter socket.

Very happy with it and already has been well worth the money (see the other dashcam thread).

Many thanks for your reply but I've decided not to get the 512g, we've just got rid of the laptops in our house and only have iPads now so wouldn't be able to put the memory card into anything to download  footage.

That was exactly the issue I had too, as my mac doesn't have a sd card slot.  You can still connect the 512g through the usb however, and view it via the Nextbase software.  Note, it comes with a cd for this (is is the 90's?! ) but you can get the software off their website.  Hope you like it!

There is a new version for 2017 -A119S. People are saying it gives even better night time recording.

What are peoples' thoughts on GPS versions? Is it a good idea to have the speed recorded on video evidence?

I have the GPS viofo but only because the mount allows the camera to be plugged in at a better angle. I don't have the gps function running as I don't want to be tracked on where I've been.

I've also only got a small memory card so that it doesn't have days and days of footage of where I've been.

You have a phone don't you? If they want to know where you've been they can tell can go back years.
