Also, just came across this from the promotion page:

Active Info Display

The analogue dials are outdated. On request, you can replace the traditional tube design for a high resolution display. The innovative Active Info Display instrument cluster can give you information far beyond your speed and fuel level.

Oh so they are outdated  Having the Discover media unit rebooting or showing other weird behavior is one thing, you can at least turn it off and be on your way. Driving with a stuck/blank/re-booting instrument cluster screen and no dials is surely a contemporary experience as it has never happened in the past.

I would imagine they've gone through a pretty hard test, it won't just turn off!  I've certainly never had any issues with my virtual cockpit, and it's a massive step up from an analogue display particularly as you can configure it how you want it too.

Your current analogue clocks aren't actually analogue anyway - they are fed from an digital sensor feed and the needle is actuated by software....

The moving of the DRL to angular and sweeping does make it look like any other car on the road, the U shaped DRL really standout and the double U of the R are pretty signature, you can pick a MK 7 and an R coming at you miles off.

From all video seen of the new Golf the DRL look quite anonymous.

As for solid state environments, and understand the 'analogue' dials are still software driven, but they are still more tactile than just another screen. But do get it, and can see how some love the replacement screens over dials. Be more upset in losing the S3 dials as they are classy.

Have more of an issue with the touch free environment, as you can manipulate a function far more assured with a switch/dial than can by touch.

You have to think of the demographic to, my Father in Law recently purchased a Polo and he left the showroom with no instruction to the menu system and had no idea how to set the radio and completely baffled why the mini screen was showing him different options (he was inadvertently cycling them) He wanted to watch his overall consumption but had no confidence in navigating the menus which resolved by having him press the car button repeatedly to cycle the driving date and Blue Trainer.

Like gauges and switches, that look polished and 'clunk' positively, that tactile interaction brings a sense of togetherness with the car.

The new environments will def be more sterile and will close the gap fro lesser VAG brands as screens are screens at end of the day and the difference in interior quality will lessen dramatically.

Not sure about it all myself, can see myself going back to modern classics, and very glad that got my R when did seeing the facelift and maybe tempted to prolong keeping it if not like what seen in MK 8

If its any help, I see the brochure says they can give you dinosaur clocks on your GTD/GTI/R as a zero cost delete option.

Just say "I want to go back to the 20th century" three times, click your heals and tick the box on the order form

Configurator is online now.

Black Rubin paint looks interesting does it have a hint of purple or is it just the picture?

Can't see the option to delete the Active Info Display like it says in the brochure. Wonder why they didn't have this as an option like the A3 to make a few £?

No GTD Blueline yet? No S&S pack for GTD.

BTW if you hate the Active Dash, you'll gonna love the knobless and largely button free NavPro unit.

I'd imagine come the Mk8 the heating controls will have all gone and be menu items in the MIB5. I'm sure I've seen Astons with this rubbish already :)

There must be a fan of Thunderbirds working at VW UK - Milton Keynes wheels on german site are now 'Parker',(either that or they don't like Milton Keynes),also is the german dark iron blue now called isaac blue ? - actually, along with Atlantic blue and Indium grey there is now quite a nice choice of colours - can't wait to see these 3 in the flesh
as I think I might have quite a dilemma choosing between them - GTD1414,where is the option on the configurator to
delete the digital dash ?
