Clubsport over-boost - share your experiences
« on: 23 January 2017, 11:11 »
Hello all,

So it's quite some time since I last worried about how exactly the over-boost is programmed to work on the CS. The initial breaking-in period in September was shortly followed by frequently crappy weather, as well as making up for the stolen time from business and family so I haven't yet had the possibility to thoroughly test exactly how it works. In the end I stopped worrying about it at all by throwing a JB1 on which ensures there's minimum 320-330 bhp on tap (350-360 with over-boost according to BMS dyno runs) but still I would like to know just when and how exactly it's supposed to come on and off, always good to know what your car makes especially under competitive conditions...

A few of the questions I have are:

- Does anybody else feel there is an extra switch after the kick-down switch? It kind of felt like that when I tried to activate it (actually it felt as bad as trying to punch a hole with your foot through the footwell)

- Does it require being in Sport mode? I have a feeling that it does. I usually drive in Individual with everything but dampers set to Sport and I am not sure it comes on in that scenario

- Some have reported that instead of 10" on, then 10" off it resets the moment you lift off your foot of the throttle, so it practically is more available than the official info from VW suggests but I'd need to be on the Autobahn to try that.

Again, the JB1 has given me quite some piece of mind  so as not to worry about VW's idiotic marketing tactics' affect on ECU mapping, but owning the car I'd like some solid, documented facts about it at some point so please share your experiences. Guessing we should have more reports the more we leave Winter behind.

Mine still hasn't arrived, but I'd also be interested to read people's opinions of this function. :nerd:

Yeah I figured it might be a bit "early" to start this thread since UK owners are probably the latest to have their Clubsports delivered for some reason but I'm already into spring and racing/modding season spirit after I came back from holidays   My car has now been pampered for more than it was designed to...

Pedalbox?  :lipsrsealed:

Although maybe a good idea in principle, I don't think it can actually address/overcome the overboost design (ie. when it comes on/off, in which mode if so etc.)

With this crap weather I'm almost 2.5 months in and only done 700 miles.

Usual personal protocol of 1000 miles chilled before hoofing it.

At this rate I may have an answer by mid March lol

I would wager the overboost is just marketing to stop it treading on the toes of the R

I bet on a Dyno it has nearer 290 ps than 265 most of the time..

ON another note, those running a CS - how's it feel ?!  Worth the extra £ !??
Daily drive - LCI BMW 330 D Estoril Blue & Saddle leather. M sport + Pack / Prof Nav / Head Up / Heated Seats
On the way - CS ed 40 tornado red, manual, 3 door
Weekend fun - low mileage portofino blue 1997 Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo
2017 Build Slot reserved for BMW M2

In fact on full power it was closer to 300ps according to most dyno runs I've seen (no surprise here Cupra 290 is also closer to 300). Also when Burger Motorsports were developing the CS version of the JB1 and measured the car with the overboost on and off the difference between them was something like 10bhp / 40Nm.

Frankly I am not bothered so much whether the car makes 290 or 295 or 300 as stock, but rather how accessible the full power is (like time and mode limitations) because If one thing is clear is that it definitely isn't this "digital" 265 off/290 on thing that was advertised, it surely seems to be having a mind of each own.

PS. As for the car itself, I've said it before that it's the first Golf in years that felt really special to me to have a second (and third) look. A gorgeous sporty interior coupled to a great steering and chassis setup, yet it never cries out loud about it even with all its bespoke styling. It feels equally superb to corner in this car as well as sitting in traffic. See now you got me started about how great it is again...

Certainly enjoying mine when I do get out in it.
It is a completely different car to the normal gti / pp fundamentally because it's loads faster.
I have gone back to manual and am really enjoying the driving experience. You can actually drive the car in an involving manner and whilst an R would undeniably wipe the floor on a point to point on your average road, for me it's nowhere near as involving.
Would be very interesting to see a rolling start lap on a dry track CS v R.

I also love the looks of the CS and think it's fairly aggressive without being tacky.
