The service guy said something about some GTD's coming from factory have had an air lock problem which has caused a similar problem with the coolant, how true that is im not too sure.

This has been recognised as an issue and documented on other forums.  Apparently due to an inability to be able release air from the system at the factory, this air later fully bleeds out of the system several thousand miles on the clock (around 8-10k) and appears to look like a loss of coolant as the escaping air leads to a drop in the coolantl reservoir.  If this is the case, top it up and should be ok.

Other common culprit of an actual leak is the water pump.

Thanks Booth, you've kind of put my mind at rest now you've said you've heard of that issue too, I didn't know if the service adviser was just spinning me a line. The car is booked in now so I'll take it in and just let them give it the once over, at least then it'll be on the system as having been in just in case something happened further down the line.

I topped mine up with some of the pink fluid after about six months. Never moved after that.

Exactly the same with mine. The dealer had a technical note from VW that stated the air lock issue during manufacturing and could occur during the first 15K miles or so. They topped it up and said to keep an eye on it just in case there's something else going on.

An airlock was going to be my next suggestion. But you all sneaked in while I was at work

My 63 plate GTD had sudden coolant loss and checked on the forums ref air lock and it never happened again during 30,000 miles of ownership.  10,000 miles in with my 65 plate GTD and the same thing happened, so topped it up and its been fine since.  Similar problem has occurred with some Audi's that work colleagues own and it does appear to be a VAG trait!  Yes if you suspect / have other signs of an actual leak obviously best to get it checked out at the dealers.

Interesting thread as I just checked the GTD the other day and the coolant level was just below the minimum after 24k miles.
I put a slight amount in and will let the dealer fill the rest at its next service.

I had the same issue with my GTD @8000 miles. Garage said that it was a common issue with the engine.
