'Not ideal' as they say.I would be very embarrassed to say the least if i was the dealer.Letting a car go out like that is very poor INDEED.
It's likely the coolant has just dropped very gradually through time and not been topped up.Some Golfs use small amounts of coolant -others don't.I've had to top up mine from min to max in 1 years use.No leaks. If you google Golf GTD coolant use you'll see lots of people can't explain the engines use of coolant.I certainly can't.
I'd certainly be getting the garage to pressure test it just incase. They have a lot of explaining to do.

Did the OP get the opportunity to check the expansion tank level before the towing company took it away? I'd be more concerned if it overheated with a normal level.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I've had to top up the coolant once in between services.

But when it happened I had a coolant level warning, not an "overheat stop or else" message.

Only time I've had that ever was on a previous non-golf when the EGR housing cracked and all of the coolant got out!

It was raining quite bad while we were waiting. Once the guys arrived i popped the bonnet and we had a look around. I looked at the tank and it looked like it was either empty or had a clear liquid like water in it, not the colour it should be. I took the keys to my old car and off we went, we were in a hurry to get back to Belfast had a few things to go.

Still no phone call as of yet. You would think if it only needed coolant, they would have been on the phone this morning?

Hmmmmm

Ah, so it's possible that the pump seal was damaged by the car standing for a while. Good news that you have the cause and a proper solution. Hope you get your new car back soon.

Be sure to keep a check on this, and the rest of the car, while it is still under warranty. Not wanting to be a Jonah, but you want it to be right.

Yeah TT, glad they took it to VW for a proper check over. Im wondering if VW will do something with the belt as it all has to be stripped down anyway, would kinna make sense to just get a kit and replace belt and pump. They kinna should as a good will due the inconvience. What 2 years and a few months old car kills a water pump?

Ill be sure to check everything over on her. Ill be also just getting VW to do the major service at 3 years just to be safe, as they check everything (apparently)

Not sure if ill get a call tomorrow, probably wont be until Friday :(

Sorry to hear of your woes Jonny. Not what you'd expect but sometimes it happens.
Your seller certainly seems to have tried their best to do things by the book so far.But it might be an idea to bypass them for now- and speak directly to the VW dealer.Just to get the story straight from the horses mouth (so to speak).
I'm sure it was all be resolved amicably soon.

They have a dealer less than 20 miles away so im guessing thats who they have taken it to, do you think if I rang up and explained the situation they would be able to tell me whats happening ?

Would it also be a good idea to contact VW customer services? I want to get the warranty transfered over to myself as I have a dealer just a few miles away, just incase!

No phone call today so i really hope to get a call tomorrow to tell me the car is ready and hopefully working this time lol :/

The garage that sold you the car should be keeping you up to date.I'd definitely phone the VW garage and also speak to Customer Services.
Whilst you are at it.It might also be worth looking at your rights under the very latest Consumer Rights Act (2015).It covers you for buying a car from a dealer.Basically you are entitled to all of your money back if you reject the car within 30 days.Just an option.I don't know if you want to go down that road but the dealer won't be able to wriggle out of it.The car would be covered under 'unfit for purpose/of unsatisfactory quality/not as described'.
Personally,i'd be a bit concerned if the pump failure has caused any long term damage to any other components.I'm not a mechanic so i'm not qualified to say anything.Might be nothing.Try and talk to the VW Techs if you can.Even go to the VW Garage if you have to.
