To be honest, going to enjoy the experience but if have to revert to a GTD even a MK 6 due to maybe wanting to balance monies for more leisure time then would readily do so. For example saw a stunning white MK 6 GTI last week outside the gym that would be quite happy to own

... time for Dad to have something not so much need, but wanted.

So looks like review has not helped, just added to dilemma
... now you are having a taste of the Golf R experience, you may find it harder to drop down a level than you think.

Agree with this.  I thought I might have this mk7 R then go back to a GTI.  Nope.

First damage incurred - Looks like a car scraping the rear bumper as pulls out given where and way scrape is formed, so 2 tiny paint chips and a white scrape about 12 inches long. Used Meguiars Scratch X 2.0 as did not want to go too intense and on first go its removed the scratches but in certain bright light and you can still see them as fine scratches.

When get dirty or in dark light they are not seen and have now received a Lapiz Pen to dab the chips, so will give this another go to get as close to fixed as possible

Obviously frustrating but what can you do?

Gave car a good clean this weekend and gave full collonite wax but hats off to those who detail, and regularly as certainly have not got patience for it and give car is only 10 days old and this filthy, no way be doing it again in 10 days!

So Collonite is its winter protection and it will now only be a two buckets wash over about once ever 6 weeks expect before more intense clean in Spring again.

Also who said Pretoria were easy? Well they are for access but to do properly there is a lot of real estate if go deep into the wheel and will likely lance next time.

Should just about squeeze 300 miles out of 51 Liters (£60) Tesco Momentum which will equate to around 26-27 MPG.

Was getting 37 MPG from the GTD with pretty similar local usage

Recent journeys being so local have been  23 MPG average as was originally on for 330 miles range.

High 36 MPG (this was on 50/50 mixed road/motorway, so can see near 40 MPG being achievable on Motorway and 400+ range)
Low 19 MPG

Shell V Power was £1.27 Liter
Tesco Momentum £1.17 Liter

If refilled twice a month that's £117 for something else just by choice of fuel.

Used to put £100 a month in GTD as an average (27 k miles over 3 years, 750 miles a month) and think the R may average out at .£120> £130 given mileage may be more 7-8 k miles now and  if use 300 miles a tank as guide.

So nothing too surprising, fuel consumption sufferers on short journeys, and rewards you on long journeys and so if your driving is truly mixed then 32-34 MPG is achievable. If local expect 24-27 MPG.

If driving spirited most of the time, expect sub 20's,

But having had the car 2 weeks now, the responsiveness and them sounds  and just feeling driving something a little special is making me less and less look at fuel consumption, its more curiosity and think by next month will not paying much attention till gauge is asking for more.

But loving the car and unless financially placed in position where have to, cannot see going back.

Very sorry to hear about the scuffs.  Sounds like a DA polisher might bring the remaining scratches out if they are smooth when you run your fingernail over them (don't catch on nail).

Prets are not the easiest wheel to clean, just a bit fiddly and involved but having them well sealed and having the right gear helps no end.

Sounds like you are fairly philosophical about the fuel consumption and cost which is just as well, lol.  Glad you are enjoying it.

Yes they are smooth and totally unseen in dim light, but shine light on them or in bright sunlight you can clearly see them so its in the surface and hopefully will polish out when do properly

The chips are tiny and to primer, so will delicately dab them, coat and then polish to hopefully blend and then seal with the collonite

Its frustrating but could have been worse and have learned to accept imperfections from day to day use and on this occasion with a little time and attention can make this one disappear.

Was looking at a polisher but as never had one, not an area of any expertise! But just searched for a DA Polisher and at that price (£60) from Argos just down road will likely go fetch one prior to next wash, :) cheaper than thought and reviews are solid across many sources for this one and definitely be ok for my limited use.

Yep, you play mind games with yourself, you can convince self of anything if really try haha. But extra £20-£30 a month is not a bad trade off.

Hertsman

Great little post to have going here. Sorry to hear  about the scuff but like you I adopt the outlook of what can you do. . Unfortunately you can't do Anything about other drivers.

I've had my R now for just under 4 weeks and I have clocked up approx 800 miles.

Compared to the GTD it's the power that gets you. Comfort interior etc there is really no difference (other than interior dial colours etc).

I much prefer the leathers in the GTD to the standard cloth in the R but on a lease car it makes no sense. Other things I miss from my GTD is Keyless - because I'm a lazy sh*te and the ability to press the voice button on the steering wheel or on the system and mute the radio.

Other than those personal gripes the car is fantastic.

There is no point repeating what you have said as my sentiments mirror that which you have put down in your Original Post. Car play is quite slick and it's a cool gadget but that's exactly what it is. Is it necessary not really but for 100 quid not bad.

Unfortunately my driving currently consists of city commuting and I'm averaging 22-25mpg. I took it up to Blackpool a couple of weeks ago and it was reading 36mpg on the way up with a mixture of mway and a road driving. My wife who is 8 months pregnant did say that the car for someone in her condition was comfortable on a long drive.

The question I would have is I am currently using v power on every fill up. It's costing circa £66 full tank brim to brim. The GTD was approx £55 with anything between 2 & 3 refills a month depending on use. The petrol cap suggests using the optimum fuel but I've seen mention of the Tesco equivalent. What are people's thoughts on fuelling the R. Does it have to be the premium fuel or have people opted for the standard fuel.

One last point which really is why I like th car is what My neighbour said. He didn't think there was much difference in the new car. He had noticed that one was a 63 the other a 66 plateand the R was slightly different but he says the thing he likes is that those who know, know the difference. Otherwise it looks understated.

Hertsman: Tesco Momentum IS premium fuel - 99RON and packed with detergents. Save yourself 10-15p per litre and ditch the V-power if you have a Tesco filling station near you or on your commute. I have used both and neither one has the edge over the other in mpg/responsiveness/smoothness. It's not like Tesco make their own, someone is making it for them, and as it is 99RON rather than 97 (Esso/BP/Sainsburys) and the only other 99RON i'm aware of is Shell - it's a good bet that Shell may be making it for them.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Shell V Power or Tesco Momentum are the best fuels to use in the R. Both are 99RON. Either will be fine.  The R is designed to be run on 98RON.  Whilst there are countless debates and threads on the matter, and some argue that 95RON is fine, IMO the car is better on the higher octane fuels it was designed to be run on.
